| Sep 30 Written by:aajoanne Tuesday, September 30, 2008 Thanks to member Labdp for her contributions to our blog! We have created a monster. His name is Sidney. If there was a 12-step group for dogs like him they would assemble in a room full of sofa's and couches. One-by-one they would all raise a paw and say "Hello, I'm _______, and I Am A Couch Potato".
I've known Sidney enjoys curling up on the sofa. I often find him snuggled in there. Tonight, though, he had to share the sofa. He nose was rather out of joint. Reno was stretch out on the sofa, and I was sitting at his feet. That left approximately 11 inches of space for Sidney. He climbed up, wedging himself between me and the arm of the sofa. Struggled to turn his customary 3 circles and eased as much of himself into the 11" space as he could. As he sank down, part way, he let out a huge sigh. In dog speak it was "cripes, what have they done with my sofa???"
Even I was feeling cramped so I moved. It was a race for space. Fortunately (or not, depending on who you ask) two human legs stretched out before four canine ones could. That left no room for Sidney at all. What?? How could that be? He wandered the front room like a lost soul. He tried his crate, the floor at my feet, he tried in vain to find room to snuggle on the sofa. He tried his crate again, the tried the floor again. And looked, oh so longingly at the sofa.
It was time for desperate measures. Gingerly he climbed up on the sofa and staked his place between the human legs. A dog's kingdom is his couch. And he would not be usurped by a mere mortal. After all, in Sidney's world four legged creatures are more deserving than two legged ones. At least that is what he read in the Couch Potato Bible for young pointers. Tags: 15 comments so far...
Re: Couch Potato
LOL.... Your story is so true for most indoor pets....My Izzybear loves her couch and a pillow for her head to rest on. When we are sitting outside by the camp fire or camping she has to have her own seat in the camp chairs....

Re: Couch Potato
And it's not just dogs...My Tookey has to be in his "house" built for him out of 2 of my decorative pillows. His daddy built it for him one time and now it is a necessity to his comfort. In his corner of the couch. Hubby stacks the pillows and Tookey wiggles his butt back in to it and is so happy. gotta love 'em.

Re: Couch Potato
I know your feelings. I have two chains in the living room. I looked around and I thought, there's something wrong with this picture. Momma Kitty had one chair and Sambo had the other chair. I'll give you three guesses where I was sitting and the first two don't count. Yep your right I was sitting on the floor! I couldn't help but chuckle at the situation!!

Re: Couch Potato
Poor Sidney! Such a sad tale for him, but very funny for the rest of us. I have two couch potatos and a couch that has foot rest & reclining seats at each end, but when the boys want the couch they look a me with their "sad eyes" look and I must move to the middle so they can both cuddle up.

Re: Couch Potato
Too precious! I love your story of Sidney (what a cutie!) The kingdom of the canines in our house is our master bed. My husband has been known to curl in positions like a human pretzel to accommodate our beagle (Bear) and goldendoodle (Annie). He grumbles, "the dogs have taken over..." but he still wants them to be comfy! XOXO

Re: Couch Potato
Yes, sign Cuchita Maria up for that group too. She and Sidney have this couch potato thing down to a science. Thank heavens she is a Chihuahua. She is capable of spreading out and forcing either my husband or I into the corner of the love seat. She is worse on the bed. She has us gripping the mattress to stay on the bed. The cats seems to do less of this couch hogging and will make themselves comfort on the arm or back of the sofa.

Re: Couch Potato
Is this group only open to canines or is there room a few felines as well? What a great story, I can so relate as I have at least one couch potato(actually it doesn't matter where he is as long as there is someplace to flop down)Scooter(my orange tabby)has this thing that it doesn't matter hwre he is at the moment if you are someplace different he HAS to be there, many has been the morning when I wake up and find that I am left with approimately 6" of space on the bed whereas Scooter & his sister(Vanity)have taken over and left Dad with virtually no room. Getting into bed at night sometimes also proves to be a challenge with these two also. Let's hear it for all the couch potato's out there both canine & feline, lord knows we may fuss at them but would not trade places(so to speak)for anything in the world. Go Sidney!!!!!! :)

Re: Couch Potato
yep I can relate to this also. Our 6 year old rott has her own love seat. If she "must" stay outside for a few hours, she has her own lot with an attached building containing a heater and an air conditioner! Yep, she's the "rottenrotti".

Re: Couch Potato
I have two for the program...Phoebe and Sydney greyhound are huge fans of the sofa. Especially Sydney and she never shows any remorse over hogging the entire sofa and pulling the afghan down off the back of the sofa to cover herself. There she is...big as life, on her back, feet in the air, stretched from one end of the sofa to the other, afghan over her and lovin it. This one will need an intense program before she gives up the sofa!
