Renting With Pets: The Online Resource for Rental Managers and Pet Owners
229 Views | 9 Comments | | Pet Care

"Moving" and "landlord won't allow" are among the top reasons given by pet owners when relinquishing their dogs or cats to animal shelters. If more rental housing permitted pets, millions of dogs and cats could be placed in homes—or stay in their homes when their caregivers move.

Those reasons are why The HSUS helps rental managers, property owners, and pet caregivers solve the challenges of keeping pets in rental properties. It's all part of our Pets for Life™ campaign, designed to keep pets with their families, where they belong. In addition to helping people keep their pets when they move, we also help solve other problems that threaten human-pet relationships, such as behavior issues and allergies.

If you're a pet owner committed to caring responsibly for your companion animal, there are several steps you can take to find animal-friendly rental housing. Read our tips on conducting a search for a rental community that will welcome both you and your loyal companion.

If you're a landlord or housing manager, you can play an important role in preserving the bond between responsible pet owners and their companion animals by instituting a pets-allowed policy. Read our advice on how to address some of the concerns you may have about welcoming pets into your community, and take advantage of the opportunity to increase your market share. You will reap the financial rewards.

Pets deserve a lifetime of responsible caretaking, and property owners deserve rental properties free of problems caused by irresponsible pet-owning residents. Our guidelines for renting with pets can help make both goals a reality.

I agree with the article. I am currently looking for an apt and it is very difficult with 2 beagles. Some places will take 1 dog but most take cats. I am sure it is the destruction that pets cause & I don't blame the landlords. I blame the owners of the pets. Train your dog or crate it. I am willing to put up deposits but then they hit you with an additional $20 or $25 per month per animal! That puts the apt out of the ballpark for me. I can't afford puppy day care either. But no matter what, I will keep my dogs. Before you get an animal be sure you can keep him. NO matter what.

I agree with the article on charging a monthly fee. Now your having to pay to have your pet when in the beginning you probably already had. Everyone knew they would have Vet Bills, and Food costs when they go the pet. Now, because society is a bit of a crunch now they want more moeny. Sure the next statement you can find pet frinedly places but do you agree with a monthly charge. And some places will charge per animal.

When I rented my house here ,They did not want animals, sometimes if a person tells them I will pay for any damages my pet does, they will come around. In some instances landlords will ask for pet deposit, once.
Which I think they do so they can recoup damage a pet may have caused.

I am not opposed to paying a pet Deposit. Why do I have to pay a monthly fee on top of that! Look @ the money they are making if I stay there fo 5 yrs. or more. What do they do with it. I know it doesn't cost that much to clean carpets. And if there is an allergy issue than don't allow pets! I also know someone who did not tell the landlord of a house she had pets and once he found out he started charging her. Many people are going to let their pets go becasue of the cost. I have seen no where in a clause that the landlords can not come in your home unannounced. THEY HAVE THE MASTER KEY.

I wish more rental housing accepted pets. Truely, without the 'monthly fee' that goes with it! Most honest landlords will not charge a 'monthly fee' for your pet. I also don't agree with charging a person upwards to $300 pet deposit for one pet!
I looked around at some rental properties, and they accepted pets(cats). The only stipulation is that the cat had to be de-clawed! How inhumane! I would like to see that landlords nails ripped out to see how they would like life afterwards! I would NEVER rent from someone like that person either!

By Jerrie @ Wednesday, April 30, 2008 9:18 AM
Oh, yes, I have noticed that too! Stipulation must be de-claw, spay and neutered in some cases!. There is more cost being added. Those who have disclosed on their houses leaving the animals behind, how are they to afford all this when they couldn't afford to stay in their homes! And the Animal Groups want them to do more research on coming up with this method of rental property. Shoot take that $300.00 pet deposit and Pet rental and replace the carpet rather than having people pay the extra cost for removing their claws, spay and neuter.

It makes me angry to see this kind of article posted! There are those of us who Foster who try to make a difference for the animals--Shelters, Rescues and now we don't have room for the animals cause people are foreclosing. Why can't these Rental Properties see that with the econcomy. Where my Sister lives now they wnat pictures of their pets! For what! Too see what kind of Dog they have and consider it dangerous. I say leave the poor animals alone and Focus on the Human's that are disruptive to society!
