I totally agree with all of Dr. Danoff's recommendations. I am also a veterinarian, conventionally trained but integrating holistic practices and alternative treatments. Any conventional/"traditional" vet who scoffs at this had not kept up with the latest research (or are overly swayed by their commercial prescription pet food companies who persist in producing carb based diets). I was recently at a very conventional very conservative veterinary conference at Texas A&M University where it was discussed that felines are basically carbohydrate intolerant and preferably use protein for energy. This means carbs get stored as fat - leading to the all too common problems of obesity, diabetes, and other degenerative conditions. This is very conventional knowledge and should not be disputed by any veterinarian. It is time that we as trusted professionals start to divorce ourselves from the mega - commercial pet food companies who concern themselves more with producing cheap food for profit than what is best for your pets health. I have 3 male cats who never had a weight problem until they were fixed. Now all 3 are over weight. Is there a cat food that is low in carbs or carb free that would be better for them and to help them get back down to a normal weight? I also just rescued a stray who is on the thin side so it would be best if the food would be good for both over weight cats and for one who needs to gain weight. Preferably one I do not have to purchase from a vet.

What about raw diet? I've been tempted to try a raw foods diet for my cats or at least some of them that have had bladder and/or UT problems. I always opted for the premium cat foods because supposedly cats experience fewer health problems. But, I haven't found that to be the case. 4 out of my 8 cats have UT/bladder issues anyway. So, when I read that raw/low carb diets are supposed to reduce health issues, I may be skeptical too. It makes more sense though when you think about cats being carnivores and all. Now I have 3 different prescription diets and one cat that I haven't been able to tempt at all with a change of diet to the prescription that she needs. I've tried a few different brands even. It's frustrating. I'm skeptical that I could convert her to raw foods either as she is the only of my 8 cats that isn't interested at all in people food. As for the raw diet, it seems like alot of work and you have to be careful about the raw meat, but if it's really worth it, I would do it. For the most part, I think my cats would eat it. Keeping track of who gets what prescription and making sure there's no food bowl hopping is work enough too. Anybody out there tried raw diet?

I absolutely agree! Cats and dogs are not cows. I think a lot of health issues are due to the amount of poor quality food fed to our pets (usually in ignorance). I'm quite passionate about this topic. As a CFA registered cat breeder, I am fully aware of feline nutrition and the lack of knowledge about it in pet owners and even Vets. I always recommend little or, preferably, NO grain pet foods.

I would love to see more vets focusing on nutrition and even better, in holistic treatments before medication. I can't tell you how many times I hear "But my vet recommended this food" only to discover it was *that* brand (not to name names, but you know the one) that gives more cha-ching to the vet than nutrition to your pet. http://www.mystictails.com

I feed nearly twenty golden retrievers and two Persian cats a raw diet, and have since 1995. It's all good, too. Better health, better hips, better weight, better teeth and breath, and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay fewer poops!

I wonder if like humans, genetics play a role? I've had 6 cats over my lifetime...all lived to ripe old ages (16+) and ultimately died of cancer. They ate crunchies and got wet food once a day with no sign of overweight. ALL my pets have been neutered and none have gained weight as a result.

I always feed my cats wellness cat food, because it is grain and bi-product free. They love it. My oldest cat is going to be 17 this year, and still acts like a kitten. I also feed my dog a raw meat and bone diet supplemented with fish oil and a supplement called missing link which has added fiber and vitamins. He is so active and has a shiny coat and clean teeth and breath!

I agree also. I have 6 cats & was feeding them Nutra products. I have at least 1 cat that would throw up after eating. Sometimes he would go a day or two with out eating. I switched to Merrick's Before Grain & with in about 5 days I noticed this cat was not throwing up & eating everyday. I also noticed my cats have more energy, & are loosing weight. For me this is also a more cost effective food, because you do not feed them as much. My cats do not throw up the hair balls as much. My cats love it! They have canned (tuna, salmon, beef, chicken, & quail) & dry food (tuna, salmon, & chicken). It can't hurt to try it for about 6 mths.
FOR CATFREAK: For U/T go to Only Natural Pets & order the Track Ease, this is also more cost effective than the prescription. I have a cat that would get U/T alot (before I changed to Before Grain) and this product worked GREAT! My cat no longer get the infection. As far as good foods go...there are stores around who sell them and I'm not talking about pet stores like petco and petsmart. Although I recently did see Solid Gold at Petco and I was surprised. I think they are trying to please people interested in natural or grain free foods after all the issues recently with food ingredients. I work for a vet hospital and we started carrying Natures Variety Prairie and Instinct (grain free) so that a good food would be easily accessible to our clients. We also made a list of all the stores around us that carry natural and grain free foods so that clients know where to go. People really need to educate themselves better about how important diet is. It kills me when a client comes in with their pet and you ask what kind of food they feed and they say Friskies, beneful, kibbles and bits... You're are setting your animal up for health issues.

I would wish for every pet that their owner/caretaker would put in the time to study the ingredients on the labels and have some basic knowledge of what is best for their pet so that no food would be bought from the grocery stores and no pet would be fed by-products, wheat gluten or corn/corn meal just to name a few. I do understand that many pets are fortunate just to have homes with children who love them and there are financial concerns, but as others have explained here - when you feed the more natural, and higher quality foods, you end up feeding less because there is more real nutrition available and it is absorbed better in the gut which ends up saving you money in the long run (along with smaller stools to clean up). I feel so blessed that I was led to start to study nutrition so that I would not unknowingly jeopardize the health of my beloved pets. Don't let vets or others put you down for doing "internet research" just be certain that you always confirm the information you are going to use. Too many vets have too little education in nutrition and end up allowing vendors to place their food in the outer office to be offered to clients as the best food available and that's just not always the truth. I picked up a bag of treats in a grocery store and read the label the other day and was sickened when I saw that they had the gall to include the dangerous preservative of BHA!! I've shopped and bought at only all natural stores for so long that I couldn't believe there are still foods out there that still include these poisons, but that means they are counting on many, many consumers who don't read labels. Please don't abuse your pet in this way - it's so easy to develop the habit of reading labels, just search for a couple of web sites that teach you what to look for.

For a diabetic cat, I would highly recommend AGAINST a diet change if you are currently giving insulin unless you are able to home test. Changing a cat from a high carb diet to a high protein/low carb diet will dramatically lower your kitty's blood sugar levels. I am fostering a diabetic cat who was eating dry food and her blood sugar (BG) readings were in the 400s, and the vet recommeneded an insulin dose on that. When I switched her over to a low carb diet, her BG readings went into the 200s almost immediately. If you continue insulin based on high carb diet levels, you could quickly have a hypo situation on your hand, which is dangerous and can be deadly.

Grain is in fact not the best thing we can feed our pets, along with corn, and other fillers that may sound nutritious. But don't let a small number of perservatives scare you, it keeps the food from spoiling.

I give my 2 cats Science Diet Indoor dry food along with a can of wet food. Jake was my first cat and he was also diabetic. I would give him 2 shots a day. I fed him a special food from Sicence diet, both wet and dry. After eating this for a while he was off insulin until he was struck with lymphoma cancer and that reaked havic. That is another story.

I work for a feline exclusive veterinarian. A low carb, high protein diet is definitely the best thing for cats. We find that cats do best on a diet that consists of mostly canned food, at least 6oz per day, and about 1/4 cup of dry food per day. Innova EVO is a really good grain free dry food that mosts cats seem to like.

His teeth became infected, and I was concerned it was due to the recent switch to all canned food. So, I have been mixing canned with dry, hoping the little bit of dry would help to keep his teeth clean (he responded less than favorably to the toothbrush and poultry flavored toothpaste I bought him....) But, as he ages, I am as worried about urinary crystals from dry food as I am about his teeth. Might I ask if you have any recommendations on what mix (%) of wet/dry food for my dogs might be good? I am also trying to lower their carbs from dry food - even though I do buy a higher end brand that does not use chicken by products, corn, or wheat gluten because of skin issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ZEUTOLAND. If you are worried about your kitty's teeth, there are some good tarter control dry foods. Hill's makes a perscription dry food called t/d, also Sciene Diet Oral Care. They are not grain free, but they are large pieces which the cat has to chew. I give my kitties 5-10 pieces a day as a treat and they really seem to like it. I have more knowledge about cats since I work for a cat doctor, but from my personal experience I find that my dog does really well eating about 75% of his diet as canned food. I like Spot's Stew by Halo. It is all natural ingredients, no bi-products, no artificial preservatives or added salt or sugar. It is expensive, but my dog, who had problems with vomiting and diarrhea, has been doing great since I started him on it.

When choosing my Furbaby's foods, I researched their wild cousins.
There are no reported incidents of wolves bringing down stalks of wild wheat or corn.
No reported sightings of Pumas or Ocelots foraging for fallen apples, etc.
If it's not what their ancestors evolved on, I don't want to give it to them.
So... Grain free for both cats and dog, and totally carb free for cats :-)
