Jun 23 Written by:cindy_alvey Monday, June 23, 2008 Just in time for Fourth of July celebrations, here are some important safety tips for you and your pets! - While it may seem like fun to take your dog with you to see the fireworks, your dog will definitely NOT think so! Loud noises and flashing lights will certainly scare your dog. Save your dog the stress and leave him/her at home!
- With your dog safely in the house, make sure he/she will STAY there. Keep your dog INSIDE the house, not in the yard where he/she may try to escape. Secure all doors and windows and close curtains. The few days after July 4th are some of the busiest for animal control officials who are dealing with lost pets.
- Some dogs can get act-out and get destructive when scared, so if your dog isn't crated, make sure there is nothing that he/she could chew that would injure or sicken him/her, or that you don't want destroyed!
- Put on the TV or radio to cover the noise of the fireworks.
- If you are home with a scared dog, don't reinforce the fear - redirect his/her energy to a game or obedience trick you're working on. This also works during thunderstorms!
- If your cat is scared and hiding, let him/her be. Don't try to pull your cat out from under the bed or other special hiding place - he/she will come out when ready.
- Make sure your dog is wearing a name tag and license....in case anything should happen, the authorities will know how to find you! Microchip is even better!

Re: Important Pet Safety Tips
My first cat Jake would hide when we would have a thunderstorm. My currant cat's Samson and Big Ben were fine when we had a thunderstorm the other night. There have been some fireworks going off and they were fine.
