Meet Cindy Alvey

Cindy Alvey

Cindy (Williams) Alvey has been involved in the local rescue community since adopting her dog, Cody from the DC Animal Shelter in 1996. Since that time, 4 cats: Silver, Puma, Sam and Frankie, have joined the family.

In 2004, she started an online pet supply company called Pet Pantry Express and in the summer of 2006, joined forces with Sue Bell, Executive Director of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue to open PetMAC – the Marketplace and Adoption Center.

PetMAC only sells all-natural foods with no chemical preservatives or animal by-products, as well as treats, toys, collars/leashes, beds -- even home-baked treats and doggy ice cream! PetMAC hosts educational seminars, fun social events and donates a portion of PetMAC’s profits to Homeward Trails and other local animal rescue groups.

So, you've got a walkway full of ice.  The kind you chip away at but doesn't seem to budge.  You throw some salt down and take the dog for a walk.  Is your salt safe for your dog to walk in?  Most salts aren't....  Regular rock salt and chemical de-icers (sodium chloride and potassium chloride) can cause your dog's paws to crack, burn and become painful and irritated, which can lead to ulcers and infection - it's simply too harsh and drying.  It is also toxic if ingested, causing stomach upset, vomiting, gastrointestinal and mouth burns, and even kidney damage.  We all know dogs like to lick and will get all the salt off their paws once they get home!  Not good for your dog - not good for your bank account (vet bills!)

Luckily, there is an alternative.  Safe Paw is a de-icer that is 100% salt free and guaranteed safe for pets and kids.  Its non-polluting, non-toxic crystals won't damage concrete, lawns, plants, floors, asphalt, or shoes, and is effective to 2 degrees F.  It's even tinted green so you can see exactly where you have put it!  And yes, it WORKS!

From the Safe Paw website:  "No other ice/snow melter works like Safe Paw™ and is 100 percent safe for children, pets, all surfaces and the environment. It is unique in its compound and benefits without utilizing any salt as an ingredient. Safe Paw is a patented dual-effect compound, made up of crystalline amide core infused with special glycols. This non-corrosive composition gives Safe Paw a two-way timed-release action. The liquid component starts melting ice instantly while breaking its surface tension. This allows the crystal-core to quickly penetrate and destabilize the ice and speed up the melting process. Safe Paw actually attracts heat to make it even more effective. This "endothermic" reaction takes advantage of solar effect and provides extra melting power during daylight hours. As an added feature, Safe Paw leaves an invisible protective shield that prevents ice from sticking to the surface for up to three days. This makes shoveling easier and saves work. For more information call 1.800.783.7841 or visit www.safepaw.com and email info@safepaw.com.

Safe Paw grew out of a product chemical engineer Steve Greenwald, of Huntingdon Valley, PA, invented for the nuclear power industry to rid facilities of ice and snow. "It wouldn't kill fish, and it had to be safe on equipment and safe for people and whatnot."  Later, Greenwald's son asked if he could make a product that wouldn't irritate his dog's feet or make him sick."

Both PetMAC (www.petmac.org) locations sell Safe Paw and you can search for it on the internet.
