Meet Cindy Alvey

Cindy Alvey

Cindy (Williams) Alvey has been involved in the local rescue community since adopting her dog, Cody from the DC Animal Shelter in 1996. Since that time, 4 cats: Silver, Puma, Sam and Frankie, have joined the family.

In 2004, she started an online pet supply company called Pet Pantry Express and in the summer of 2006, joined forces with Sue Bell, Executive Director of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue to open PetMAC – the Marketplace and Adoption Center.

PetMAC only sells all-natural foods with no chemical preservatives or animal by-products, as well as treats, toys, collars/leashes, beds -- even home-baked treats and doggy ice cream! PetMAC hosts educational seminars, fun social events and donates a portion of PetMAC’s profits to Homeward Trails and other local animal rescue groups.

Have you heard about the newest rage in doggy chews?  Sweet Potatoes!  I thought it was kind of crazy when one of our PetMAC customers told me about them, but I brought them in the shop and they have been selling like hotcakes!  One brand I really like is Sam's Yams Sam's Yams.  It's a small company based in Nevada and their customer service is excellent.  The chews are simply dried sweet potatoes - that's it. Nothing added - just dehydrated sweet potatoes...pure and simple.

Why sweet potatoes?  LOTS of reasons!  First and foremost - dogs LOVE 'em (after all - what good is the healthiest treat if the dog won't eat it?!)  They are high in fiber and low in fat, so a great chew for those dogs that are a little chunky and need some low-fat treats to keep them busy.  No wheat-gluten or other preservatives and are hypo-allergenic, since dogs aren't allergic to sweet potatoes.  Sweet potato chews are 100% digestible and are MUCH safer than rawhide, which can get lodged in the throat and is difficult to digest.  High in the “Fido-Nutrients” your Dog Needs: Vitamin A, B6, Calcium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Iron, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin as well as the all-important anti-oxidants to help maintain good health. The ridges help to keep your dog's teeth clean as well.  The list just goes on and on....  no wonder they are such a popular treat!

Dehydration is the oldest, simplest and most natural form of “processing” food. Anyone who has spent any time camping or out on a farm or ranch can attest to finding berries, nuts roots or vegetables dried by the sun and wind, sometimes still on the tree or plant. Dehydration is a great way to preserve and maintain the nutrients, vitamins and fiber found in fresh sweet potatoes!

Sam's Yams has 3 different sized chews for different sized dogs... Big Boyz are extra thick wedges that are great for dogs with large chew appetites!  The original Veggie Rawhide is good for the average sized-dog, and the Bichon Fries are French fry shaped potatoes that the little dogs just love!

Re: Doggy Chews Straight from the Ground!!

I assume this is something that could be made at home. My pup, Happy, is on a special diet for IBS and it's difficult to find him treats that don't aggravate his condition. I plan to give it a try.
