You are truly amazing! Its easy for me to tell you to keep more animals when you are so overwhelmed!I had to help with a shelter closing down after 30 yrs! I guess we are all going crazy with this economy! If people would only use the ABC program to stop so many animal births! I love them all but the ending is not always so great when we are overpopulated! Anyway, keep your chin up & I will talk soon!

I know what you mean animal people are a special breed. Woo was abused by his owners 26 yr old lady and a 28 yr old man - they pulled his legs out of the sockets and kicked him so much that his little ribs have all been broken. He has an incontinence issue too because of getting hit in the kidneys so much. I don't know a lot about him, but my mailman took him from those people and gave him to my mom. He felt so sorry for him he was never really fed just thrown scraps and kept locked outside all the time by a rope. Anyone could of came by and took him or worse another animal could of got him anytime. It was aweful plus we had to remove his hair because it started growing inside with the matts - so my vet did that for me. Now almost 2 yrs later - he is perfect. Has accidents, but feels so guilty afterward and God forbid you yell or anything he just cries and hides. It is so sad and we use to have a very loud house before him, but now even when we have disagreements we say things very calmly when he's around. Whimper is my little nut bar - you can do anything with him or around him. He has no fear unless you drop something around him - he is afraid of being hit by things. But yet if you grab him and kiss him, hug, him, squeeze him or even spank his paws - he just kisses and kisses. Not a lot of worries from him end - he does suffer from separation anxiety and hyperventolates sometimes. But he is usually not alone. My mom is with them all day and I am home with them everynight. And we plan everything around them - there going for there haircuts tomorrow. Woo is very sensitive so they have to muzzle him, but he will bite if he feels threatened still - hell I would to after what happened to him. I'm really glad to be your new friend - have a great day and a nice weekend. Love ya Fran and thanks for reading and asking about the boys - I'd love to hear more about your fur kids too.

Aww that is so nice -- Toofy is so cute. I rescued Woo he too has aggression issues with men. So I will probably be single forever which is good as long as he's happy. He is also possessive and a wee bit jealous of Whimper at times, but Whimper takes a lot of abuse from him. Whimper is so good natured. Woo had 2 broken left legs and 2 broken ribs when I got him and my vet said that he had numerous breaks over his little life. We give him as much love as we can now and we trained him to do all sorts of little things - like eat dog food, pee outside ( not always ) he has some damage done which caused incontinence so it happens. My wall to wall carpeting is not a fan, but its ok now that I know he is safe and sound. That is so nice that you work at the shelter - I donate to a few, but if I worked there I would have a million of these little guys. My mom is just as bad she's the one that took Woo home before I even knew. We are bad influences on each other - LOL Have a great one and nice to meet you and thanks for being my pal Love ya Fran and my fur boys

Hi Maria; I haven't had a lot of time for comforts these days. Work has been very busy and tiring. I know how you feel worrying about your fur-babies when you go on vacation. Nerys was the only thing that I worried about when I went to Norway two years ago, because it was the first time I was away from Nerys for more than two days. Many say taming feral kittens is impossible if they are past eight weeks, but I've managed with older kittens to make them pets. The first step is always understanding the kitten's tolerance of handling. Cats are very guarded of their personal space. If they say Okay, it's fine. But if they don't like it, you can't force yourself on them. Mamma had been someone's pet so when she brought her kittens to me, she was at ease with my handling them. So it was just a matter of winning their trust, which I managed quickly. I hope to find more time again and visit more often again. I wish you well with all your fur-babies. Peace and long life, Barbara

Maria; Alley Cat Allies has been working for years to make people realize that killing feral cats has not worked to lower the numbers of feral cats. The biggest problem with feral/stray cats in shelters is that many often have issues that make them unsuitable for adoption. Feral cats have their populations added to by pet males "who can't have kittens" unneutered, allowed to roam. But I'm not telling you something you don't already know. Cats can be much faster at finding their way out than we think. I know how you feel worrying that she may have been run over in the busy street. Living in an apartment complex I sometimes worry about letting Nerys out the front door since the parking lot is so near our door. But she's pretty wary around cars since I don't have one. So I'm almost sure Nerys stays away from them. Mamma was stray, but since she was someone's pet, she's very comfortable to have a home again. I haven't had to climb on any rooftops, but I did have to get Nerys out of a fenced-in tennis court when she was a kitten. Peace and long life, Barbara A

Hi Maria; I'm sure you're keeping busy with Toofy, Smoiky and the foster children. I was looking at your last letter and noted that you're a William Shatner fan. Did you see his appearance on Oprah a week or so ago? I've met him three times at conventions. I grew up watching the original series (Spock was my favorite), but I have to say that Next Generation was my favorite and the closest to what Roddenberry wanted Trek to be by all accounts. I am unit Commander in a Trek Fan Club and we do a lot of community service which is how we believe we can build a positive future like Star Trek. Nerys is the ship's mascot (as the C.O.'s companion) and is on our posters when we raise money for our local Humane Society. Kiss all the fur-babies from me and have a good evening, Barbara

Hi Maria; Stress is often the underlying cause of many illnesses in pets and people, and since you've explained her current situation, stress is an obvious "ground-zero". Cats tend to be less comfortable with "new additions" and we just have to let them work it out because we humans don't understand the world of cat as much as we'd like. They are not as domesticated as most of our other companion animals. I don't care what Nerys' breed is, but I think her father was a Norwegian Forest Cat since she definitely fits the description. So when people ask what "Breed" she is I say Norwegian Forest Cat because she fits the breed profile. Even the people I met in Norway insist she looks like a NFC. Her name is harder to explain. It is a name from Star Trek; Deep Space Nine. She is named after an alien character with ridges on her nose because Nerys as a ridge on her nose with the hair standing up at the center as if someone pinched it to make it stand up. They share a similar personality as well. Hug and kiss the babies, Barbara

Maria; I'm sure you agree that people think getting a "boy" is a solution so they don't have puppies and kittens, but boys still make babies. People seem obsessed with being able to identify their dog by breed, but unless you're using the dog for specific work or as a show dog; what does it matter as long as you recognize the dog's needs (energetic, physically and/or mentally) to make the adoption a good match for your home. I identify Nerys as a Norwegian Forest Cat, not because it's important to label her with a breed, but because she's been recognized as such by almost all of my Norwegian friends (in Norway) and by an avid NFC fan who attends cat shows. Reading the breed traits in Cat Fancy magazine also described her. However, I don't need to have a "breed label" to enjoy my relationship with Nerys. I wonder if your foster baby's hair loss might be stress related. She's been through a lot recently, even if the vet points to an illness - my gut tells me stress is the root of the problem. I'm off work for vacation so the babies are very happy. Kiss all your babies for me, Barbara

Maria; I took that picture of Nerys before she was a year old, so she actually did not have her mane like she has today (long-haired breeds typically don't have their full coats until they reach five). It is still one of my favorite pictures of her. Something new and unavailable is often stressful for cats. It is important to them to know what's in their territory. When my local Humane Society has room, they give shelter to the animals in the city pound, but times have been hard since they have had to empty terrible puppy mills twice in the past five years. I can't understand why people keep buying dogs when so many need homes in shelters. Kiss the babies for me and have a good week, Barbara

Maria; I'm always happy to hear of people like you willing to volunteer your time to help get animals adopted. So many animals need loving homes because of irresponsible people who don't get their pet (male or female) altered. Just as bad are those who get a puppy or kitten they are not ready to commit the time to care for it. So many of those kittens who will get adopted will find themselves like Mamma, abandoned when they're not cute anymore or because their people move and can't or are not willing to take them to the new home. Mamma is such a sweet cat, I can't imagine how anyone could have left her. Our fur-babies always know when we bring a stranger into their homes. If I didn't live in an apartment I'd probably be taking in other needy cats like your sweet girl whenever I found one. It's a bit expensive, but I've purchased personalized stamps that I have Nerys' picture on and fashioned it after the US stamp made for the Humane Society six years ago. I've added a scan of our stamps in Nerys' photos. I wish you luck finding homes for all your needy cats, I'll be arranging a new fund-raiser for my Humane Society for this summer later this week. Have a good night, Barbara

Hi Maria! Our 4th wasn't too bad. We have a rude neighbor who shot off firecrackers and fireworks right outside our apartment (even though it's illegal in the city), but it was much quieter than last year. We also had afternoon thunderstorms all weekend. It is very sad that so many people are reluctant to take in older cats. I know I'd have more if I didn't live in an apartment. Since she came from such a loving environment, she's very likely to be what most people want from a cat, affectionate and attentive - once she settles into her new place. Maria; Over the years I've taken in adult cats and kittens, depending on who needed me at the time. Some times new additions help stressed animals, since it gives them a companion. I already have many demands on my time, or I would probably help the adoption days at my local PetsMart and Premium Pet Products stores. I have helped out at a free spay and neuter clinic, being with the animals when they wake up to make sure they're okay. I don't drive so I can't visit the animal shelter very often (which may be a good thing), but my heart is always thinking of how to help animals. The perfume helps everyone intergrate, there will always be some adjustment period for personalities of course. I had no idea what Mamma would do to go in a carrier, and I wouldn't want to be put in a box if I didn't know why so I put her in as gently as possible and then let her out again - lengthening the time she stayed in with the door closed and eventually leaving the room. I did the same with the kittens since they had never been contained. My "Catch and Release" huntress, Nerys, brought me salamanders this weekend. The weather has been so odd this year that those were the first for this summer. Mamma stopped hunting within weeks of bringing her kittens here, except for a few cicadas to teach the babies to hunt. A skill Nerys excels at, however she doesn't harm her catches, she brings them in to me and I let them go again. Some people get freaked out about her "gifts", but it's very important to a cat for you to accept their presents. Since she was born a wild baby, it's hard to deny letting her outside. She stays indoors while I'm at work, but I let her for periods in the evening. Never unaware of where she is for very long. If she goes down in the yard I check on her, calling her if I don't see her and she comes running as fast as her legs can go. She doesn't like the summer heat, so she stays in more once the temps go over 80. Have a good evening, Barbara

I know what you mean about older cats not getting adopted, so many people will only adopt kittens and shun older cats, where there seems to be more willing to take in adult dogs. I don't understand why people think adult cats are more trouble. I'm glad to hear they have a new advocate in their corner. I do know it's important to introduce resident pets to new pets correctly. The best way is to put a floral based perfume on all so everyone smells alike and they accept that they all belong. Then it's a matter of personalities. Mamma actually did pretty good in the carrier the first time I had to take her to the vet to get spayed. I schooled her for a few weeks before her appointment and she came through the whole ordeal none the worse. Nerys was actually the most difficult, getting upset in the carrier. I left instructions with the vet to have someone talk to her if she started acting stressed. I had a meeting Saturday, but the girls and I had a quiet Sunday. I watched a couple of my favorite movies and did a bit of work on the computer. Have a good evening, Barbara

Maria; I knew pretty quickly that Mamma once had a home, because she didn't take long before she'd let me pet her and liked to be combed. You are probably right that a hispanic male did some harm to Toofy. Animals carry associative memories of trauma and it can be hard to break those without strong positive experiences. When I put my hand above Mamma's head, she cringes as if she thinks I'm going to hit her, when I never have in over eight years. I've never helped with the PetsMart cat adoptions, but I do belong to an organization called Alley Cat Allies that supports and promotes the TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release) solution to stray cat colonies, along with a host of others i.e. HSUS, ASPCA, PETA, North Shore Animal League and the National Humane Education Foundation; in addition the Star Trek club I work in regularly holds fund-raisers for our local Humane Society. Nerys is our poster-child. One other thing I do to support animal shelters is visit the Animal Rescue Site and click daily www.theanimalrescuesite.com to donate food to animals in need, and the store also donates so I use their stuff for the fund-raisers. It's great for sending gifts to others and it's not all that expensive, and it goes to a worthy cause. Barbara

Maria; It seems almost impossible to avoid cancer, since we can never completely control our environment. I still have my memories of Kalifi as well as the many other animals that have shared my life, but are now gone. You said Toofy still has issues from his abuse, as Mamma has, so I know you have to have a kind heart to soothe his anxieties. Many animal behavoirists says animals don't have the capacity to remember for a long time as we do, but I have to argue with that. If what they say is true, Toofy and Mamma would not exhibit the fear and anxiety we've seen from them since we do not pose the previous threats. As you might be able to see in Mamma's picture, she has very small misshaped ears. The vet said she probably had had tumors, but I wonder if someone may have slammed her head in a doorjam. She's very leary of the sliding door. Since I don't know what may have happened with the person who may have been her guardian in this apt. complex before leaving her, she may have been hurt by a door like mine in a different apartment. I know she was living in the complex at least three years before she came to my porch, which is how I estimate her age. I don't really know. I have to add that the kittens were spared the abuse that Mamma faced, since they were less than 5 weeks old when they came to me. I may have been the first human they ever saw. They were pet, and combed; snuggled and played with as often as I could on a daily basis. One post script to their first morning, I told you they all just came out like they had lived there all their lives, but when Nerys (the runt) came out for that first breakfast, it was the second and last time she ever spit at me. She was so tough and cute. Barbara

Mamma tip-toed onto my porch for the first time just a couple of days after I learned the cat I had at the time was dying of cancer. The news was painful, but as she slipped away, Mamma's obvious needs helped ease the approaching farewell. Once she carried her four kittens to my home, I had my hands full socializing them so they could be adopted. What I call my porch is really a deck that stands over six feet above ground at the outer most point and about 4' where it meets my storage closet so she had to climb up a post with the kittens. The 2 males were in the storage closet when I got home that night in May, and the 2 girls were on the ground beneath. The larger of them growled and spit at me as I approached, but I just reached out, picked her up and put her on the deck where Mamma was waiting. The last one was the runt, Nerys, who I had to chase under two of my neighbors' decks before I caught her and I was the one who climbed the railing of the deck and put her in with the others. I gave them a can of cat food and Nerys planted herself at one side of the plate until she was full - scratching and growling at her littermates. The next morning they all came out of the storage closet for breakfast like they had been living there all of their lives. Animals with special needs always seem to know who to turn to and I also believe they know when we need them. Barbara

Wow! I'm surprised you found our story, I wondered if anyone would find and read it. I feel very strongly about adopting pets rather than buying from breeders. Mamma still shows me signs of what her life was like after she was abandoned, I'm sure she was chased away more than shown kindness. I feel good that I can make her life comfortable now. And Nerys is, without doubt, the best companion I've ever had. Mamma knew she found her new home within the first week she came to my back porch which is why she moved her kittens here. I believe animals fill very special places in our lives and offer companionship in a way people cannot. Peace and long life :)
