I was listening to "Calling All Pets" on NPR today and they said that it is very rare for cats to like their tummies scratched and that most will hiss and otherwise resist.  This just struck me as odd since over the years I've lived with LOTS of cats and as far as I can recall they have ALL liked their tummies scratched.  Even the bobcat at the wildlife hospital where I volunteer likes her tummy scratched.  Have I just had a very weird experience where all of my cats have had this "rare" trait?  Do your cats like their bellies scratched?

My cat that lived to 18 NEVER liked her belly rubbed, nor did most of my mother's cats.....but the two kittens I have now don't have a problem with it. I thought their reaction was weird!

I never knew cats DIDN'T like it until I visited someone when I was in my 20s whose cat hated it. (And ,that cat let me know it- painfully....)My two cats I had growing up were raised w/ a dog, so I thought that was why they liked it. But the two I had later liked it, and so do all 10 of the ones I have now. The one I got at the A.P.L. (Jimmy Page) actually walked up to me and rolled over so I could rub his belly!:)=^..^=

I have 4 cats right now and only one of them likes her belly rubbed.  The others think they're under attack.

I guess I've been lucky!!  I love scatching their bellies.  It's funny how you take things for granted

I've read that some don't like it as this is a vulnerable spot, so it would be because they feel threatened I guess. But the article also said if your cat does like this, it is a big sign of trust. Both of my cats love a belly rub. But my male cat hates to have his back feet touched & my female cat does not like to be touched on her rump area. I don't know if that's a personality trait on their part, or just my odd cats, LOL!

My cats hates to have his belly rubbed.

He can be a purring, loving little sweetie, but the second I even touch near his belly, all four paws come down on me, claws drawn, along with his head and teeth. And he won't let me near him again without attacking for awhile. Go figure.
