| I've recently bought adult dog food for my 8 month old lab-mix puppy. Before that he has been given puppy food. I'm not sure what the exact difference is between puppy food and adult dog food and I'm worried that the adult food formula may not be right for a growing puppy. Is it okay if I feed him adult dog food before he's technically an "adult'? | | | |

| December....your pup should be on a puppy formula until at least a year old. If I remember correctly, the puppy formulas are high in protein and other ingredients a pup needs while going through growth spurts. The adult formula won't hurt him, but it may not be giving him all the nutrients he needs at this stage.
If you have a Pet Supplies Plus near you, they are usually awesome about helping you choose the right formula for your dog. They often have sample bags of food that you can bring home and let your pup pick the one he likes the most.
And don't skimp on quality....the higher quality foods do cost more, but they have less "parts", corn, wheat, etc. Looks for foods with natural ingredients ....chicken, lamb, rice (vs. corn or wheat), veggies, etc.
Hope this helps!

| On the food subject, food with lots of fillers produces lots of poop. Higher quality food means less to pick up. Always a good thing in my book. | | | |

| Start your puppy off right. Many of the commercial brand dog food has all kinds of "junk" in it.....preservatives, chemicals and things you really don't want to know about, really. I found a great holistic dog food that has a puppy formula then you can go into their adult food. Go to www.petlane.com/petbuddy there you can look around but the food is called Pure Woof. There are also some great holistic treats. Get the puppy formula now and gradually add it in to where in 4 weeks he'll just have the Pure Woof. My beagle just passed away last fall from chronic renal failure. I believe it was all the chemical and preservatives that made him sick. I won't feed my animal anything but holistic now. | | | |

| | An eight month old dog can be put on adult dog food without a problem. I like any food by Natura.....Innova, California Natural, Innova EVO. My favorite is the California Natural as it is a simple food. | | | |

This is a very common misconception perpetrated by people who want to sell more dog food (including puppy food, which usually costs more.) My pup, who is now 8 months old and GORGEOUS both structurally and coat wise, has NEVER had puppy food. Puppy food makes pups grow faster, which can contribute to pano, and hip and elbow dysplasias. As youngsters, most pups cannot support their own weight properly- how they look when they are supported (your hand under their body) should be how they look when unsupported- try it sometime with a roly poly puppy! My pup was never roly poly after being weaned from mom (and not really then, either, once she started moving around!) Feed your pup a good quality food made with human grade ingredients, that doesn't have too high a carb content.

| | Holistic food is best. No fillers, preservatives, etc. please visit www.trilogyonline.com/ragsmead and click on the pets tab. Watch the video to learn about pet food and explore the site to get all your questions answered. By the way, in Life's Abundance there are no ingredients imported from places like China. | | | |

| Once you get the kind of food you like you might run it by this website... www.dogfoodanalysis.com And there is also another one, but it's late and I can't think of the site I'm on Innova EVO, we are loving it! Her coat is so pretty now. With less fillers her poo's aren't as big either. Looking into RAW but I don't think I'm ready for that yet. | | | |

| | My Dobe rescue had quite a stomach problem when i got him, probably from the different foods he had been on and also they tend to have a sensitive stomach. He's been on California Natural for quite some time now and is doing really well. I have it delivered to me by Fed Ex through a company called HeartyPet.com. Where I live it's about the same price with the shipping as the local store charges which is about 10 mi. away. This site and the fur parents are really helpful and know their "stuff". Good luck. | | | |

| Of course the more waste produced most likely means less nutrition the animal is receiving. All those fillers are just acting as fiber. All creatures need fiber in their diet, but when this is the main ingrediant, how can we expect to have a healthy, happy dog? | | | |
