I posted awhile back about my pit bull being sick since I moved to Mexico in January.  Won't go throu all the tests, vets, etc.  - bottom line is this:  I'm certain that one problem is spay incontinence and have finally gotten a vet here to prescribe Premarin.  I have not started the med yet.  Azul is and has been for some time very lethargic.  She doesn't play or respond to much of anything - will go for a walk but returns immediately to her kennel and just lays there - all day, all night.  I have researched in a million areas and of course there are a million things that might cause this.  She has no infection, bloodwork and urine analysis is fine.  HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED LOW GRADE FEVER AND LETHARGY IN A CASE OF SPAY INCONTINENCE?  I am now a woman obsessed and still cannot pin this down.  She is not the girl I know and love and I simply do not know where to turn.

Cross the border and go to an American vet. I have heard that sometimes when an animal is spayed that they do develop infections on the inside if the procedure was not done properly and Azul might still have an infection even if it is not registering on tests.  Something is not right inside of her probably due to the surgery. She is probably in pain and it would be worth the trip to the states to get something done to help her.

We had a foster litter of puppies who got sick after they were spayed and neutered.  After a lot of trial and error, one vet figured out it was a tick borne disease.  Actually 2 different ones and the pup that had the 3rd kind was getting the same meds the others were, but he wasn't getting better.  Rocky Mt. Spotted Fever andCanine Hepatozoonosis.

The disease can be dormant until there is a big stress factor. The spaying and moving to their new homes was the trigger for the virus to take hold. Your dog sounds like she has the same signs.

The university of Alabama is doing a lot of research and we finally got a vet who contacted them.

Good point, Catabeag. Tick borne diseases aren't included in normal bloodwork either...the vet would have to specifically request them (for bloodwork sent to the lab). There's also a snap heartworm test that tests for heartworms, Lymes, & Rocky Mtn spotted fever that can be run in house IF your vet in Mexico carries them. Those tests require a small amount of blood & will test for antibodies that indicate exposure to those diseases. Vets here in the US can sent out bloodwork for a tick serology which will test for the whole kit-and-kaboodle and are more accurate than the in-house tests...maybe check with your vet to see if they send small animal bloodwork out to labs for this. Good luck!

thanks folks - talked to the vet and he insists ticks are no problem here.  This is total craziness.  Azul wants to lay in her kennel all day (though pit bulls can be lazy!)  Her eyes look sad, she's lethargic and seems depressed.  The vet prescribed Premarin though I haven't started it yet because the urine leaking stopped - for now at least.  Does anyone know if dogs experience lethargy or depression because of hormone imbalance like women do?

have also spent $$ at online vet sites as well as free vet sites.  Vet #6 here in Mx took xrays.  Says he's sure all of this stems from a genetic disorder of the cartligege in the joint where the hind legs meet the hip.  Says it is common in Rots, Pits, Boxers.  He thinks the lethargy is because she is in pain, that the leaking urine is because the muscles are so tense and then when she sleeps they relax and out comes the pee.  She started limping on her back right leg.  The vet noticed that  she didn't put full weight on that leg and when she sits, she sits to the side.  I couldn't tell anything from the xray myself.  Vet started her on 2 mths of Artroglycan which is  Chondritan - says it will relieve inflammation and repair cartilege in the joint.  I researched online and verified this.  At first she seemed better, but in the last 2 weeks she has started having problems with both back legs.  She can't run and falls if she tries to jump up or turn a corner sharply.  These problems have been going on for almost 10 mths now
