My cat stopped purring when he was 6 months old. He is now a year and a half . He was neutered around the same time as the purring stopped. The Vet gave him a clean bill of health and can't give me a reason why he stopped. He's very independent and the only human he warms up to is my husband. He gets along very well with my other cat (a female) we adopted about 4 months ago and his best buddy, our 10 year old rottweiler, who he sleeps with every night. He's never been a real friendly cat and will let you know if he does not want to be touched. I know there was no abuse because we have had him since he was 6 weeks old. My family says I spoil him too much and I constantly tell him how much I love him. He's a american shorthair and is black and white.  I've been told he thinks he's a dog!!!  Can anyone help???

Sometimes cats go through rebellious phases, like kids. Some cats just like certain people. With 9 of my own, and about 20 or so others that I babysit, I don't think any of them have similar personalities.Dogs pretty much stick with breed characteristics, but I don't think that's true with cats. One of my vets told me that cats inherit their temperaments, so I tend to try to pick friendly ones. However, two of mine needed a home- quick- so I just brought them here, and am working with them. They are more aloof, and I would probably have more luck trying to work with a dog.Just keep petting your guy, and see what happens. I try not to take anything personally with kitties. =^..^= Hope that helps!!!!

I have seen this happen before in kitties when they are subjected to a surgery. It is extremely rare but it can occur. As long as he is healthy and happy with his buddies, don't worry, just accept it -- he is afterall -- a cat.

I had forgotten that he did have surgery when he was about 7 months old. His third eyelid became infected and the vet eventually removed it after he tried antibiotic cream which failed to treat it.  Thanks to you who have responded. And I guess your right, I should not take it personally.  A cat is a cat. Though sometimes they act so human. Come to think of it, I know a few humans that act like that too. Thanks again.
