Hi! I'm "BeachyPaws" & this is my first post!

My cat Spike, who is not yet 1 year old, is a BITER. Yes, he bites! HARD! I have several scars from Spike's "tastings".  We have tried the squirt gun method & just about everything that is HUMANELY possible.

Anybody got any ideas? I don't want Spike to stop being playful! - I just want him to be a bit more... uh, er..... GENTLE. Ya know?

Thanks!

hmm my cats arent biters but my bro's cat is (Kamikazy aka psycho kitty lol He just lets her get away with it.

Maybe spraying Bitter Apple on your skin.  Maybe he will decide he doesnt like the taste as much lol.  I had a rottie we called baby jaws since he chewed on everyone lol  Bitter Apple and toy substitute worked for him.

Might want to make sure to have a toy handy and every time you play with him make sure bites the toy.  Also might want to stop playing with him everytime he bites (sounds like training dogs but since that is what I know how to do lol)

Good luck

I've had many cats over the years and only a few were biters.  The most successful deterent I found was to yell "ouch" and stop playing immediately!  I tried the water gun method and it didn't help at all.  Good luck.

Your boy sounds like a normal kitten to me.

He is full of energy and looking to expend it in play with you.

Biting isnt really biting, it may feel this way but, not. Kittens are explorers of texture and taste. The next time he goes for your hand, or watever limb hes focused on, hand him a toy to latch onto. Get a lil sour apple flavoring and spray a bit on his fav spot on you that he likes to taste. he may then prefer to trek elsewhere for his next chew. To Spike, you are meowmie and littermate.

He is wrestling with you like he would a sib. Since he sounds to be an only,You're it! lol. A Spraybottle overly used, becomes common place and is looked for in interacting. Avoid using that for special cases only.

once he gets past this chewing stage and he ceases teething, most of that nonsense will stop. Good luck and have patience. hes a child, lol.

Look into getting him neutered ASAP to avoid his version of spraying also!

waiting til the last minute, will only cause him to then do wat comes naturally.

I know few who look forward to it, and even fewer who will tolerate it. Sadly enuff, the cat suffers, becoming homeless.

Well, rambling here, lol.

Good Luck

Dave.

Yea I agre sounds like a nornal kitten.. My spikers was the same way as a kitten and has grown out of it I am sure yours will too. Maybe he needs a playmate someone his age and size would help too, and they can bond.

one last thing here, Neutering will also greatly reduce the aggressive behavior. Had to add that.

Thanks everyone, for your replies. Spike is STILL the biting hellion of a kitty. We do have another cat - Angel, a female - she's about 2 years old, & has no interest in playing or socializing with Spike at all. Spike sooo wants to get to know her, but she'll have none of it! And she is 100% Angel, believe me! She just loves to be in my lap, getting petted & purring. Pure sweetness.

Spike does like to try to play with Trixee, our dog. But Trixee is almost 12 years old, & has no interest in playing at all. Except from time to time, she'll grab a toy from her toy box & bring it to us to throw so she can fetch... 2 or 3 fetches & she's all done, LOL.   BTW, both Spike & Angel are "fixed" (as is Trixee, of course) - so I don't think that's not part of the problem (with Spike's biting.) He's been biting before & after the neutering. Didn't change a thing.

Our next door neighbors have a Jack Russell puppy - sometimes we puppy sit IzzyB. Spike & IzzyB will play & play & play... she'll chase him then he'll chase her. They wear each other out! But of course that only lasts for a little while. Spike bites us mostly when we try to pet him. We can usually get three or four good petting strokes before he'll roll over on his back & start biting us.

I think I'll try the bitter apple on the back of my hand (his favorite biting area). I'll let ya know how it goes!

Thanks again for your responses, & sorry it took me so long to get back to you all!

My madison does the biting thing when I try to pet her as well. She's a spayed adult and she doesn't do it every time, but well over half of the times I try and pet her.

I don't have much to offer, but I have noticed that if I wait until she wants my attention to pet her, she's much less likely to do it. Also, I have noticed that when she has catnip she bites me MUCH more often. So, maybe take all his catnip away for a while?  I hope you find a way to love your new spike without getting bitten!

Beth
