Hello,

I am really in need of help with my two little girls....Sally and Lucy. They are still kittens, about 9 months now. They are not responding to the squirt gun method. (w/water in it) Who ever said cats do not like water ! Mine love it!  When they get into or do something wrong I squirt them or yell "aggnnnt'! The gun does not work anymore. They just look at me like "do that again mom!" . If I yell they stop but go right back doing what they were. I have to get up, yell or go get them. They are good when are not home (I guess??) It does not seem they get into much. Yes they are confined to one room. I can tell you when we get home or with us on the week ends, zoom>>>> they are off ! They are into everything! What am I doing wrong? Will someone please ---H E L P! ! ?

My oh my, Dinky,  you certainly have your hands full!

First thing I would suggest is inventing a new game, and having them play along.  The game you are currently playing - they're getting into mischief, you're getting up and chasing them, they're running, you sit down, they come back for more mischief and more chasing - is fun for them but frustrating for you.

I would try to spend at least a half hour, longer if possible, playing with them, in the evening and getting them tuckered out  before everyone goes to bed.  I use laser pointers and feather toys here with my Crew.  However, Benny has gotten smart and realized where the red dot originates, and he is forever attacking the pointer instead of the dot on the floor.   You be the boss, you set the rules.  You play the chasee, let Sally and Lucy chase you (or the toys) instead.

An alternative to the squirt gun is a clean empty soda can with a few marbles or pennies inside.  When the girls are into mischief, shake the can, or toss it (gently) in the general direction of the trouble makers.  Don't throw it directly at them!  You just want them to associate an unpleasant noise with their bad actions.  You must be consistent though.

Hope this helps! Cathy and the Crew

Any kind of attention is positive reinforcement. Either redirect or ignore.

I hope to have a new computer up and running soon. Then the little stinkers better watch out, I will have the AA team behind me! hahaa. Really thanks so much and sorry I haven't been able to get back on as soon as I wanted to.

Hi there.

Wondering firstly, what is the nature of the misbehaving exactly?

The Spray Bottle is to be used as last resort and not for every little noise of antic that comes with the territory. Which is wat it sounds like has been occurring here.

if these are M.Coons or Turkish vans you have, you're definitly meowing up the wrong tree, lol.  What are they doing wrong, aside from including you in their lives?

Need to know this first. Misbehaving is too general a term.

Dave.

When your babies are doing something wrong, you have to let them know right then and there at that very moment so that they can associate your discontent with that bad act. Do not scream or yell -- change your tone instead -- the tone of your voice -- they now know your mood has changed to "serious." Other than that, you seem to have normal young cats -- they love to play and get into everything. I have 6 cats and quite a bit of space. The more space the better. They also love looking out of the window and the glass door -- someone's got to keep an eye out for the birds and squirrels! They run up and down the stairs chasing eachother; I have a kitty condo (e-bay) and they love it -- running up and down and all around. Once they familiarize themsleves with their surroundings, they will stop getting into everything (because they've been there already and know what it's all about. Also, once they're older like their mom (who is about 2 1/2 yrs old) they'll relax more.

After I lost my 2 older cats, (I have a third one also), I adopted 2 kittens, and my whole life turned upside down!!! I had forgotten what kittens were like. Every paper in the house had teeth holes in them, they took stuff out of my purse, brought laundry down to the living room from the bedroom, I had to get ground level and "child" proof the whole house. They stole my rent money, socks, pens, remotes, I had to give away all my plants except for one on top of the china cabinet, they move shoes, and take up one third of my bed!!! They are now 4, and I wouldnt change it for anything.

Kids will be kids...like someone else said, take some time to play with them. Night time is when they are up and running around, as soon as the lights go out and we go to bed, Mosa is running around talking away, Spark is running around looking out the windows, and Mystic is after them looking for trouble lol
They are now sleeping peacefully and its mid afternoon, why cant they be like that at night?

Water guns are not a good training tool. Saying NO loudly and clapping your hands or a can as Kathy above said, when they are into something they shouldnt be in. It depends too on what they are doing...

I also use the laser flashlight where they run after the red dot -- they really are so comical. It aids in their daily physical exercise.

We use the laser with our male cat - he will chase the red dot until he's totally pooped out.

The female - well, we get a 'Right. Get Real. Look at the Idiot'' look from her. She justs sits around looking cool! But, we did discover that she will spend a lot of time with a 'treat ball' - a red lopsided ball with a hole - put a treat or two in the ball and let her roll it around trying to get the treat to fall out. He's too lazy to deal with this one.

You just have to experiment to find what works for each kitty. You can find them at any of the large pet stores.

I have two 10 month old kittens that I had since they were 5 weeks old and it sure is different then only having one cat! They get into everything!! Actually it's very good entertainment! I too use the water bottle and yes they do go right back and do the same thing some times. I just keep repremanding them and eventually it does sink in. I do find that when they get really 'bad' :) it's time for a new toy. This always works. They love the little furry mice....and if I only give them one, the play lasts even longer because they have to 'share'. Also, I have become less anal about a lot of things....if they want to drag my yarn all aound the house, well it's better than knocking stuff off my end tables! :)
