Dram, are there other cats in your friend's household? Maybe they are bullying the new cat, and she could be submissive peeing. Did they have cats before, and maybe their pre-existing scent is making the new cat uneasy about using the box? They should thoroughly clean the area with a commercial product to remove any former cats' scent. I agree with Allie, first order would be a vet check, and be treated for any UTI. Also, was there a change in the food? Anything new can stress out any cat, especially an older cat. Is the cat spayed? Hopefully she is. Duh, I just re-read the original post. Dram, would your friends know if the cat was recently spayed, before she left the shelter? That could be an issue. Let your friends know to be patient, and to not reprimand the cat harshly, as this will cause further stress and exacerbate the problem. Also, don't reprimand the cat two hours AFTER the incident occured; by then the cat has no idea why you are yelling at her, and begins to associate the litterbox with loud angry owners. Let us know how it turns out! Cathy and the Crew |
