My dog Amber is 5 months old and housebroken. She knows everytime she  soes to the door she will be let out -that is our purpose of letting her releive herself.  We taught her that. Now she goes to the door just because she wants too find a stick to bring back in or to  roam around for a while in the heat.  We do not want her out in the heat and we also don't want to get up and let her out when she doesn't need to go and then get up and let her back in when she is ready. We would like to train her to go out and relieve herself and come back in. Is there a training exercise for this behavior?  Is there a way to train her to go out and potty and come right back in?

If you feel that she doesnt need to go out to the bathroom, just dont give in to her at the door. you can teach the recall for her to come in.

How do I teach the recall for her to come in? When I call her in she just meanders around until she finds a stick or something to bring in. I need to know a procedure to get her to come in. Could you give me advise on that? She will come in after she pottys but will hesitate to come in if she doesn't need to potty.

Maybe she just wants to play. My lab mixes loved to spend time outside. The chocolate lab would always lay in the sun (even when we lived in SC). I think it felt good to him after being in the a/c. I guess I'm not really understanding the reason why you don't want her outside.

The one thing I did do when housebreaking my dogs was to give a hand signal and a command to 'go pee' when we went outside. They always knew what I meant and went right away.

I'm kinda with cacky on this one.... I let my goofy dumb dogs in and out however many times a day they want, if I'm home to do it. It makes them happy, gives them a chance to get a little exercise and fresh air, and gives me a break!

Maybe you should get a doggy door. If she enjoys her time outdoors, let her have at it, and the doggy door eliminates the inconvenience for you!!

all training starts with a long leash first. in fact i would change the command you use for recalol since "come" probably holds no value any more.

I LOVE my doggie door! It's greatly convenient for both me and my beast (especially since DC traffic can be unpredictable to say the least, and with the doggie door I don't have to worry about him not being able to get outside to potty if I get stuck in traffic).

I originally got the doggie door for my malamute since she needed to go out more frequently in her old age. She loved it so much that there were many afternoons when I'd arrive home to find her sleeping on the back patio in the shade!

I've been very fortunate to have dogs who aren't 6' fence jumpers, diggers, or nuisance barkers, which makes them good candidates for a doggie door. If your pup can be trusted to stay within the confines of your yard then a doggie door can be a great addition!

I know this is an older thread, but I have to chime in.  We have four dogs and we do have a doggie door downstairs for them at our house.  The little stinkers will use that doggie door like crazy during the overnight hours when we are sleeping and while we are away at work, but the second we are at the house, they will stand at the upstairs back door and just look at us like "hey, ya gonna let me out or what?"  And, we do.  Ridiculous, I know, but it's funny at the same time.  The best is when they kind of "forget" and they will use the dog door to go outside but come up the back deck and sit at the door waiting for us to let them in, like they want us to think they don't know how to use the dog door. . .I swear.

Amberdoodle, how's your progress with your pup?  I know that our Goldens and our Borders love being outside, especially in the cooler weather.   They will go out there and play in the grass, chase bugs, chew on sticks and bark at passerbys all the time.  Unless I really wear them out through a lot of walks/runs and ball playing, they will go in and out pretty regularly throughout the evening hours.  Maybe if you step up her exercise during the early part of the day she will be less interested at going in and out all evening?

Good luck!
