Does anyone know about pet therapy training?  One of the hospitals in my area has a program www.spokesdog.com/Overlake.html  It seems like a great program, but I was wondering if anyone has personal experience with it?  Pets are great therapy just on their own!

I'm not familiar with that program.  There are several that are nationally known - Delta Society, Paws For Friendship, Therapy Dogs International.  Some require a dog to have its CGC (Canine Good Citizen), some do not.

Do your homework and find what works best for you.  Animal assisted therapy is an awesome program.  You'll love every minute of it.

Btw - Paws for Friendship is the group I am active with.

Lise,

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about animal assisted therapy.  I am an occupational therapist who has been doing this for nearly 16 years now and also a very active evaluator/instructor for Delta Society.  I have a lot of information as well as stuff I am doing with my current therapy dog, Chief, on my website. The link is www.jumpstarttherapies.org if you are interested in checking it out.  \

Just contact me and ask me any questions.  I'd be happy to help you get started!

I am interested.  I live in Oklahoma City.  I have an 11yr old female mix breed and a 3yr old male Shiba Inu.  Where do I start?  I have taken my dogs to a nearby nursing home (with the facility staff's ok)  to visit a nieghbor.  I found that these short visits were very rewarding and would like to get both dogs, if possible, certified (if that is what you call it).

Dottie - I believe Paws For Friendship has a chapter in Oklahoma City.  You might google Paws For Frienship to get more information.

Dottie,

I belong to a national organization called the Delta Society (www.deltasociety.org) and their visiting animal program, Pet Partners.  I am both an evaluator and instructor for their Pet Partners program, as well as a registered member.  The are many reasons that I have chosen this national group.  The first reason is that their registration is a 2 year registration and it is recognized nationwide.  So, if I ever moved, the registration for me and my pet goes with me.   Delta has also established standards of practice for the industry and has been a leader in the field of research on the human animal bond.  It's a great program to be involved with and many hospitals and other facilities throughout the US recognize it's status as a leader.

Becoming involved in the Pet Partners program is very easy.   You can do a home study course or go to a workshop.  Once you have completed this, you and your pet are evaluated as a team, and then your veterinarian does a health screen.  Once you've completed this process and send your information off to Delta, you are registered and ready to  go.

Many smaller, local groups do have their own process and are good groups to become involved with.  Some require either Delta or Therapy Dog International involvement, so it may be something to do even if you want to become part of a local group.  I just think having a national backing lends more credibility to you as a team as well as to the industry in general.  National standards are  important to ensure that visiting animal programs follow established policies and procedures for safety of the animal, the person, and the facility....which is the primary reason I have my national registration.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!  I'm more than happy to explain how the Delta Society process works.  Again, I really think it's a wonderful group to be a belong.

Good luck!

Tammy

Rio is both a service dog and a pet therapy dog.  He and I worked with a private trainer.  The pet therapy group we are involved with is local to Tampa, Fl & is called Project Pups (pets uplifting people).  Rio LOVES working pet therapy!!!!  He thinks it is so much more fun that working as a service dog.  When he is wearing his service vest he is expected to ignore all distractions.  But when when he is doing pet therapy he gets to interact with people and boy does he love it.  I would encourage anyone whose dog has the right temperment, to get involved in pet therapy.  It is rewarding in more ways that I can even begin to tell.
