My dog was very sick and we baby him. He is now 8 months and can not train him to go potty outside. He uses doggie pads but I feel like he need to go outside for awhile now. "
I am embarssed to buy doggie pads for 8 month old.

I would suggest that you try moving the potty pads a little closer to the door each day and then move them just outside the door and then eventually onto the lawn. Once the pup gets the idea that the potty pads are outside, you should have no problem getting him to go to the door to go out. When that happens, then just do away with the potty pads and the pup should be ready to go on the grass. Hope this works for you. :)

Do you crate him?

I would probably start from scratch.  Ditch the pads and begin all over.

Crate for bedtime.  First thing in the morning take him out.  Be patient.  As soon as he goes, have a "Pee Party."  Either brings treats, or just get really excited "Good Boy, Smart Boy", etc.  Then take him out every two hours.  If you can't watch him at all times, you might try tethering him to you.  That way you get to keep visual contact with him.

Consistency is the key.  If you have accidents, just clean them up, your puppy has already forgotten about it, so any "naughty puppy" will just have your dog thinking you're crazy, or WORSE that it needs to hide it's pee/poo from you.

Good Luck!  He sure is a cutie!!

The best two commands I ever taught my dog were "potty" and "poop".  I read somewhere that if I used those words every time she did her business, pretty soon she would associate them with the act and do them on command.  It worked!  Now if we're in a hurry, it's raining, it's the middle of the night, or we're in a strange place, I can easily control when and where she goes.  This routine of giving her commands and praise when doing her business was combined with crate training.  I can't speak highly enough of crating overnight.

Tiff is right on target! I agree 100% crate the unsupervised dog, or keep him in your eyesight! you MUST show him where to go when you catch him in the act right away. dont yell, we dont want the dog to be scared to go in front of you.
