Hi all.  Our little Yorkie, Tickles, has Demadex mange.  What I've read on it says it's an ongoing thing.  Tickles wasn't getting better when reg. vet treating him, so we took him to Tuskegee University.  He's much better, they have him on a prescription shampoo and ivermecterin.  Anyone have experience with this kind of mange?  It's different from sarcopic mange.  Thanks!

I do believe this type of mange comes from the mother during nursing! Dippings are sometimes recommended.

Demodex is a mite that  dogs have all the time. During times of stress or illness the bodies immune system does not keep them in check so they start to take over. It is not contagious like sarcoptic mange is. Ivermectin is the common treatment so he should do well on that ........ Good luck with your Tickles

A little bit more info on demodectic mange.... It's most common in puppies (who don't have the best immune system yet), and they usually "grow out of it." Adult dogs can sometimes be prone to outbreaks during times of stress (as stated above) but rarely some dogs just can't seem to get over it. These dogs usually have an underlying health problem. Sometimes it is difficult to determine an underlying problem, though, and those dogs may have trouble with it throughout their entire life... this obvioulsy can become very frustrating for the owner, the dog, and the owner's pocketbook.

It doesn't sound like your dog's case falls into this category, which is really good! If he is responding to the medicated shampoo and the ivermectin, you probably don't have a lot to worry about. However, if he is an adult, you may expect him to have flare ups during times of stress!

If he's an adult, is he neutered? Sometimes unneutered males can be stressed by nearby dogs in heat, and that can send them into a demodex episode... Just something to consider!!

Good luck!
