Has anyone out there had a dog diagnosed with Canine Dementia (also called Canine congitive disorder)?

My Weimie is now almost 10 years old and has had several health issues in the last 6 mos. We had a scare with bloat 5 mos ago and as a result of that found out he had a thyroid problem which he now takes meds for.

Recently he decided to eat a small pocket sized notebook, thank goodness he did not eat the spiral wire part. This is very odd behavior for him to eat anything like that. When he was a pup he ate everything and anything he could but he hasn't done that in years. My vet said it could be early signs of dementia or even possibly a sign of the big "c". I was just wondering if anyone else had a dog with dementia, how they diagnosed it, what symptoms their dog experienced as well as treatment.

Thanks!!!

I've seen dogs with dementia through working at a vet clinic. Some of the dogs/cats behave like they are blind- getting lost, stuck in corners, not able to find their food bowls...some have personality changes- biting family members or acting strange. I'm not sure if it would change the treatment plan, but you could request a CAT scan to rule in/out tumors causing the odd behavior. There are senility drugs to prevent cognitive function from getting worse (along the lines of alzheimer disease meds).

hyper/hypo-thyroid problems are pretty common in domestic cats and dogs and are treated easily with meds. I personally don't have dogs with dementia, but I have had one of my dogs bloat. The xrays showed how horrible his hips were, so he is on meds for that. It's always something...
