I have a two year old siberian husky. He is supposed to have a bull mixture in him but appearance wise he looks like a pure sibe.
I have two problems with him, he is very hyper and would like to know how to calm him down. He gets all the exercise that he needs,he is well loved and we are very proud of him, very intelligent.
Lately due to fireworks, and new neighbors,Sam barks continuously when someone comes into the house(non stop) even if it is family he hasn't seen for a long time. What is best to stop him? Is there a medication or collar etc. to quiet him down some for both barking and hyper? I really need help soon as we are looking for another house and most landlords won' t allow dogs as it is. If they would see Sam as he is we sure wouldn't be accepted. Sam is family and you don,t give up on them.
(When he sees people passing by thhe yard,he doesn't bark at all, but when he sees dogs passing, he barks too much, but it is in happiness).
He has been in our family since six weeks old.   samandpat

Hi- Suzanne is right about someone to change the behavior. The best I've heard and read is Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer...he is amazing with endless insight and advice about unwanted canine behavior and ways to correct it! Please read his books- they may help. I am reading his book ''The PAck Leader''- EXCELLENT info!

Everything starts with obedience training.

I've had siberians and malamutes for many years and they're extremely energetic and intelligent as a breed. Obedience is a must so start looking for a reputable trainer in your area. Running/biking/backpacking with them helps a lot to reduce some of the energy but you must be diligent with it...there's no such thing as "too much" exercise for siberians, LOL! Due to their intelligence, they can also be stubborn. Have you tried 'problem solving' toys? Try something that will keep the dog engaged for as long as possible to help with his mental stimulation. Good luck!

I agree- Millan is the best for getting at what's going on with excessive behaviors. Another one worth listening to is the show, It's Me or the Dog- outstanding tips- and barking, even in trained dogs is addressed almost every show- check it out! On Animal Planet. The barking will stop. Good luck.

I wish that everybody could have seen that show last night!! Victoria Stillwell (?) did an episode on excessive barking, and showed how the Boxer's body language revealed extreme fear and anxiety- not so obvious to those of us who aren't trained in dog behavior. It was EXCELLENT...the dog barked to the extreme at every dog he saw- to the point where the owners couldn't walk him. After a few weeks of exercises aimed at GETTING THE DOG'S ATTENTION and building confidence through positive reinforcement...he was a different, much better behaved dog. ''It's Me or the Dog'' is worth watching!~
