The socialization peroid for dogs ends at the latest 16 weeks old! At this point, getting the dogs comfortable around people is what your goal is. Sounds like your dog may be a bit fearful. This can be due to the lack of socialization early on, or just plain weak nerves due to genetics. Since I haven't seen the dog, I don't want to be unfair to the dog. Do you have control when distractions are near?Ultimatly, the dog needs to obey you in any situation. You can try to turn your friends into "treat machines" when they are around the dog. I would just have them drop the treats where the dog see them. I would NOT force affection by having your friends feed the dog treats. This process is very slow, and may get a percentage better. I have a standard poodle that would run every time I said " sit" This dog was sick and abused when I decided to adopt him. I clicker trained him to be comfortable around me, now 18 months later he approaches my guests as well as sits for his treats and food and praise. He's about 8 or 9 yrs. old Frank |
