I just learned that people are advertising their pets for free on Craig's Lists around the country. I am very concerned that pets may end up in a bad situation. I know that all Craig's Lists do not support posting pets. I have also heard that some rescue agencies review the lists daily in their area to help pets get to a rescue situation. I am just very concerned that any pet advertised for free (and even some for nominal fees), will not go to a proper home. Any other thoughts on how we as a group could help these animals better?

I really have no idea what we can do but I agree, I didn't realize they advertised pets, and I would be concerned that some of them may end up in the wrong hands as well. Let me know if you come up with any ideas and if we as a group can help!

i saw on animal cops a couple weeks ago where a "prized fighting" pit was listed for several thousand on craig's list, the aspca was alerted, and the guy arrested.  as crazy as it is that it allows it, i'm glad someone is at least reviewing the posts!

There should be something Craig's List can do with their rules for what can be posted. I have just heard that some rescue groups in some areas also review the list for pets listed and attempt to convince the poster to place them with an agency for safety reasons. I just do not think many people are aware of what may occur posting on Craig's list and other types of posts that are similar.

Hi,
I do animal rescue in the New England area. I have many many times seen posts for pets on Craig's list and I hate it! Free to good home??? Probably not if you post them on Craig's list without proper adoption contract and rules and regulations.
It should be banned.
I have sometimes seen Shelters advertise on CL and then they invite the people in and do the proper adoption that way. Then it is used just for getting people into the shelter.

Just as an FYI and in their defense, craigslist does have a disclaimer on the Pets section and Pets are listed in the "Community" section, not "For Sale"  The disclaimer that I copied from the website reads:

[ no pet sales or breeding please -- rehoming with small adoption fee OK ]

Also, anyone can "flag" an offensive ad for removal in any section, and they do indeed followup on flagged ads and remove them.

It's actually not a bad way to get some of these bad animal owners(?) arrested as attested to by one responder.  I hope these dummies keep posting so they can get the punishment they so richly deserve.

Craig's List does NOT help pets.

Our shelter has been a vicitim of false posting on CL.  The post stated we were 'killing' our animals on a certain day due to overcrowding.  This was a HIGHLY FALSE claim and I have 'flagged' the posting several times a day and NOTHING happened.  I even e-mailed the administrators and NOTHING happened.

It sickens me because even though our shelter is a very small shelter serving two HUGE counties, we are doing our best to get away from the 'high-kill' status we currently have.  We've been doing a great job too!

Recently there was a post for one of our 'sister' shelters and I immediately notified them of the problem as well.

Due to this, I absolutely OPPOSE Craig's List.  They do absolutely nothing while folks do all this abuse on there.

This makes me sick to my stomach.  I had no idea Craig's list advertised animals, let alone for free.  Everytime I see "free kittens" in the local newspaper I cringe.  I've heard stories about what people do to these innocent victims.  If anyone comes up with an answer to this problem, please post it to the community.
