I'm wondering what other pit bull owners give their dogs for chew toys.  I adopted a 9 1/2 year old pit bull from a shelter one year ago.  This guy needs to chew.  He has dug deep holes in my sofa cushions (the sofa has to be thrown out).  He has torn up five dog beds, a few towels and a blanket.  He wants rawhide every single day.  He was chewing three or four large ones per day, but I've now cut back to one small rawhide in the evening - a smaller size - about five inch stick, which he devours in about three minutes.  I've taken to sitting down with him and holding the end of the stick and getting him to relax with it and just gnaw at it and savor it.  If I'm sitting with him to monitor, he chews it up well.  He likes the bully sticks but, again, its devoured in less than five minutes.  Plus, at $5.99 apiece, that's an expensive habit.  So that's a sometime treat.  Lately I've been giving him one dental treat in the morning (Greenies) and one rawhide stick in the evening.  So far, so good.  Nothing else has been ripped up.  So I believe I may have solved the chew problem.  But I'm wondering what other owners give their dogs.  Ben doesn't like the hard bones - it seems he wants the ones he can chew up and swallow.  His teeth are fine, he has no health problems.  He just wants to chew.  I mentioned this to his vet who simply replied "the dog needs to chew".  So, pressed rawhide it is.  And a bully stick once a week.  I've tried distraction - either sitting with him and giving him tummy rubs and brushing him - taking long walks, meeting his friends in the park to play - and that's all well and good.  But when we're back and he rests - he's sitting at the cupboard where I keep his rawhide and before I am able to go to sleep - he has to have one.  I'm concerned because I hear rawhide is not good for a dog's digestion.  Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

I also have an almost 9 year old pit that is a major chewer. I have found that kongs filled with treats and/or paste have helped. He doesn't actually chew the kongs but they seem to occupy him enough to keep him from chewing everything else.(we have another dog too so we can't give any of the yummy bones or they fight!)

We've been really lucky. Omega chewed one belt when he was a puppy...one of my husband's favorites...and I guess he saw how upset we were and hasn't chewed a single thing he's not supposed to chew since then.
I keep a good supply of greenies around...and I pick up those long lasting chews every now and then, especially when they are on sale. He loves pig ears too. What I also do is pick up a huge supply of cheap stuffed animals...either from the dollar store or from Goodwill (where you can get well made ones for 99 cents too). I give him one...he chews off the eyes and nose...runs around with it shaking it to and fro...sits down and REALLY goes at it for a bit...plays fetch with it...within 3 days, he's biting holes in it and pulling out all of the stuffing. It manages to keep him pretty occupied.
