| Don't call me a weiner dog, and don't call me a Beagle! Any Basset lovers out there? I grew up with Bassets, then had Labradors for a while. I love them both. But I think Bassets will always have a soft spot in my heart. They're such clowns! Even if they're not trying - those sad eyes, those enormous feet on a short body, and a howl that carries into space. Oh, and did I mention that they adore me? I've decided that's a new prerequisite for any relationship. Other Basset people, I'd love to hear from you. My two guys (father and son, 14 and 13 respectively) have been wonderful pets, but they've had their challenges. I'd love to share and learn from other people who have had aggression issues or health issues. Or anything else, including pictures and stories! Welcome! Sandy | | | |

| Sandra, we have a five month old girl, Rosie. She is a red and white, pretty and naughty, sweet and feisty girl. We are so into bassets. We have considered Goldens, they are so neat too, but always fall for the bassets. We are hooked. She is as stubborn as stubborn can be, but that is something we have found in each one we have been owned by... Nice to meet you! Cheers, J | | | |

| | wow, this is so great to hear that they are all stubborn, i thought it was me!! My basset bertly is my "baby"and I treat him as such even though he is 11! He has tons of energy and loves to go for walks, but is also very stubborn and manipulating when he wants something (usually food!) He is spoiled but we cant help it cuz he's so loveable and cuddly and loves attention.. He is an angel--to US (me, my boyfriend, my dad and usually my mom). HOWEVER.., to pretty much everyone else, including anyone who comes to house (forget about the mail lady..) He is a not so nice doggie, to say the least! He growls and barks at people, has shown his teeth and has even taken some snaps at people! I just dont GET IT!! I know he is protective of me and his house, but his aggression towards other people is so weird to me since he is soo good w/ us. Its like he is bi-polar or something! My sister calls him "devil dog", and yet he is an angel to the rest of us. Not that I havent had my moments with him, ie cant disturb him when he is sleeping, food disputes and stuff but nothing like how he is with outside people or even people that we know. Its kinda frustrating because I dont want people to think my dog is "mean" when he is not, but I just cant understand why he gets like that or what I can do? Its cool to meet other people who know about bassets! | | | |

| Hi ya'll! My hubby and I have two Basset Hounds, both turn 2 this year (Paws just celebrated his birthday on April 18th). We have a female and a male, but are NOT planning on breeding them. Chief, our female, has been spayed to prevent this! We don't want to raise puppies until we are done raising our own kids. Speaking of which, we have a daughter, who will also be 2 this year, who is their best friend ever. She throws the ball for them, chases them around the house, they chase her around the house, and they ALL push each other around! It's quite funny to watch! They are all 3 VERY clumsy, so it makes for good laughs!
As for the aggressiveness. Not sure what the deal is there, maybe just not socialized enough? We take ours with us everywhere, unless we are running errands in town.
Ours are both very submissive, rarely being aggressive. Chief has been known to growl or bare teeth at strangers or strange noise if me or my daughter are close by, but as soon as I tell her it's okay, she stops. Our male, Paws, is only aggressive when it comes to trying to get "down and dirty" with Chief. Chief doesn't take his crap at all, and is quick to tell him where his place is. (I find this funny too, since I declare myself a strong, independant woman... it only seems natural our female would be the same way hehe). Paws is a big baby in every way! He sounds like he has a squeek toy permanently stuck in his throat. It can be rather annoying when he refuses to stop.
I can tell you this, I've NEVER known a breed as stubborn as the Basset! After being raised with German Shepard/Lab/Chow mixes, very obediant breeds, this was a learning experience for sure!
Great to see other Basset owners out there! Look forward to sharing stories with you each!

| | I love bassets. My exhusband has Fred our basset (well always was his dog lol). Fred is very very smart and mischivious. He steals things of the counters, can open up cabinets. I had baracaded the litter boxes and he figure out how to get to them, mostly to show that he could LOL. He really is a handfull and gets into all kinds of trouble. Unfortunately he is a bit of a bully due to getting away with murder lol. He goes everywhere my ex husband lol | | | |

| I was introduced to Basset Hounds through my husband. Well, I was introduced to dogs by my husband! I was afraid of dogs until we decided to get a puppy (a year ago) so I could learn to love them. Our choice was a Basset because my husband was always crazy about them. It was love in this first sight! Bolo is the sweetest dog and is mom's boy since then. I learned to understand dogs through him and I can tell you my fear was gone by the first week!!!!
I can't imagine any dog being cuter then my basset!!!! P.S.: Sorry about my English. It's not my first language.....

He looks and acts like the basset hounds. my vet tells me I have all the benfits of a bassett hound with Buddy He is so awesome yet he has a slight stubborn steak. Lots of personality. you would all love him and he would love you all.

| | Bassets must have very strong genes. I think every Basset Hound mix I've seen definety has strong Basset traits, almost entirely pushing out the breed(s) it was mixed with. | | | |

| I currently have 3 basset hounds. Angel just turned 13, Poppy is 11 and Happy just turned 1. My Bassets aren't very stubborn, but I have had the MOST stubborn one in the past. George (girl) was a rescue and I swear there has NEVER been a more stubborn animal alive. It took her about a year to stop being afraid of everything and once she realized that no one was going to hurt her, she started taking advantage of us! Stubborn girl was such a joy to have around. We were blessed to have her for 8 of her 10 years and can say that I still mourn her. I'm quite paranoid with baby Happy now. George had to be put down because of old spinal injuries, (possibly from the abuse). But having faced that horrific nightmare has made me ultra catious with Happy. If he jumps on the furniture, which he KNOWS he isn't supposed to do, I will put him down. I don't allow him to jump down for fear of an injury that will come back to haunt me later. I still have nightmares of George's last days, and I cannot possibly go through that again. I can't imagine my life without a silly hound dog at my side! | | | |
