I just had all of my animals to the vet for their annual checkup.  Everything was going fine, until they got to my 'middle child' Shadow, a lab/shephard mix.  He's 4 years old, and the vet found a 'rectal growth.' He recommended surgery for this as early as possible.

I'm healthcare in the human version, so am very worried -- I know what this can mean, although my vet wouldn't tell me the prognosis.  You need tissue samples for this.  He did talk about different herbal supplements, as well as how easy chemotherapy is on dogs (I don't know about doing this.)  The mass is inside in the rectum, as well as protruding from it.

He has surgery scheduled a week from now, and I'm worried about the surgery, as well as what they will find.  The surgery will be done via laser, so is less invasive.  However, I've had little advice about how he will be after this.  I plan on getting my crate out again to confine him a little, but I have a lot of questions that are still unanswered.

The mass looks aweful.  From what I've found online, a rectal mass is unusual, and normally is not good.  I'm grieving for my Little Dude!

Hi,

First of all thank you for loving Shadow so much and doing all you can  to help him.  You are on top of this and with allot of prayers and positive thoughts he can be ok.  Please believe that and go with a positive heart to have his surgery.  Remember that our babies can read us and  if he sees you so worried he will feel responsible for your happiness and  may not be able to get all the good vibes we are sending for his complete recovery.  Healing thoughts are being sent Shadows way right now.  Peace to you.

You're doing the right thing!! Having this growth removed will help him to be more comfortable and after the biopsy you'll know more about how you can help him. Perhaps calling your vet and asking him/her what kind of post-op care your dog will need would help you feel better? That way you can have everything ready when he comes home. Being proactive has helped me in the past when my dogs needed surgery = ). Please keep us posted

Hello. Just looking around within the site and came across your story. A dog that I once had went thru this . The vet tested and found it to be cancer. I choose to have the surgery done. The vet said It was bad chances on allmost everything, but theres that chance?? The growth was as big as a mans  heel. It turned out well for the old boy and he lived for about three more years. He was active and seemed to gain life after the operation. I salute you in trying your most for him. I wish only the best for your friend and for you too for being a responseable man. That says that you had good raising or you learned to make some good choices in lifes experiences of morality.  Good luck to you both. Thats returning love.    westhmpsn1
