i recently used BioPet Vet Lab’s DNA Breed Identification Test and was very confused/disappointed with the results. I swear my mixed breed dog Winfield is probably 1/2 rottie and maybe some beagle/hound/cattle dog.These are the  breeds they detected in my dog,  listed in order of prevalence, with the most prevalent breed listed first.

Both my dogs sire's & dam's have their DNA on file with the AKC for identification. I am curious as to "how" sending a DNA sample could possibly determine the breed or breeds of a dog. When the sires and dams DNA of my dogs were submitted, the AKC already KNEW what breed dog they were. Maybe I am not understanding something....but that would be like me submitting my own DNA, and the lab would have to figure out what nationalities I am.

I know that with the sires and dams DNA on file with the AKC, all litters that are produced from those dogs will "Prove 100%" that indeed the sire and dam are the true parents, so to speak.

But if you just take a random dog in the world, and send in a DNA test, how in the world can that tell you what breed or mix of breeds the dog is?

I will look for the link, but my old hometown paper did a story on this new DNA testing for dogs.  It is true, you just swab their mouth and send it in.  Since it is new though, there are only a small number of breeds compared to how many are out there.  It is kind of cool.  There have also been significant debates with mutt owners like; do I really need to find out? I still love my dog.  However, some other owners find out, especially to help out with medical situations.
