Dogs Purpose, (from a 6-year-old)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish
Wolfhoundnamed Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their
little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping
for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we
couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia
procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good
for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane
might learn something from the experience

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time,
that I wondered if he understood what was going on.  Within a few minutes,
Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty
or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering
aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me.
I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life --
like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The six-year-old
continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to
stay as long."

Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run t o greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure
ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.

Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them
gently.

Be always grateful for each new day.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!!!

This makes me sad because we had to put our 10 year old Border Collie, Montana down October 1st. with so much energy, she started moving more slowly and we discovered the lumps around her neck and in between her legs.  She had lymphnoid cancer which is a very agressive kind. We have always used non toxic cleaning products in our home but she swam in our chlorine pool every day for the last three years drinking the water every day.

We had just switched it to saline but it was too late. The vet said that should not have made a difference but we knew it did not help.  We reallly miss her.

I have her ashes by our bedside and I look at her picture every night before I go to sleep. We have 4 dogs now.  Molly is 5 years old and was due to be put down by a couple getting a divorce (one was going to Iraq.)  She is a very good, wise dog. she is very calm and she knows she is loved with us.

Ginger was with us when we put Montana down and she just turned 1 year old. She is Australian Shepard and chow mix. Such a cutie.  Corona is our German Shepard/Lab mix. She weighs 100 lbs and lays around. She is very calm. and we just got Diesel who is a chewer and jumps on everyone. He is our only male pet and just turned 1 year. He and  Ginger are boyfriend and girlfriend.  See my pictures at tucsondogluver where you will see my babies.

They are all rescues and I love them so much.

It is sad to put a dog to sleep but we can't be selfish because quality of life is so important and  you don't want them to suffer. We had tried Chemo for 3 months (she was happy) but it wore off and we had to let her go.

God bless that little boy. That is so thoughtful. we have been sad too On June 20th last year we had to put down our Cherokee, our 12 yr old White German Shepherd and Wolf mix. She had developed severe hip Displaysia. She woke up that morning and couldn't get up' She became terrified and started thrashing around. We got her calmed down and carried her outside to relieve herself. Then we laid her on a blanket and then her human dad started brushing her and talking to her. he looked at me and said it was time. He said go call the vet. So with a breaking heart I called the vet. Cherokee never liked going to the vets office. But that morning she calmly walked into the vets. she didn't fight us. She went into the back room and laid down without any problem. And she just laid there. She knew her life was over. She was ready. I cried and cried I didn't want to let go of her. But she was at peace. she just laid there she wasn't scared or upset. I kissed her goodbye and she went to sleep. She died with a lipstick kiss on her head. Our cherokee was gone. she is nowover the rainbow bridge.. she is missed terribly' I have her ashes in our bedroom. Justthe month before Our little boy Apache died in his sleep. he was 10 yrs old. He was German Shepherd. It so hard to lose 2 so close together. I cry a lot . i miss them so very much.

Oh that is such a bittersweet story. Remarkable little boy. To come up with that at his age is just amazing.
