Madison and I are recovering from our first mini ice storm and I wondered if someone can speak about the dangers of various types of salt. My drive way was a sheet of ice this morning so I put down regular old table salt which as done the trick - however I wondered if there was any danger with it? I had read somewhere that rock salt can be fatal to dogs if they get it on their paws and then lick it, but wondered if there were any dangers with regular old table salt? I would appreciate any info on this topic~ Thanks!

I do not know about table salt, unless your dogs ingest high quantities of it, maybe it would not be good for their blood pressure? I do know that you can buy pet-safe de-icer at stores like Petco and PetSmart. We used it at Petco when I worked there, and it didn't seem to bother any of our furry customers. Cathy and the Crew

with all of the snow we get here, and living in the city, alot of people and businesses use salt, but not "paw friendly" salt. sometimes when we are walking, if it is freshly put out, and i do not realize it is there, Blackberry will either sit down with a look of pain, or even lay down. Then I have to clean off his paws with my mittens. Sometimes I even carry him if I see the salt. Supposedly it burns their paws and stings. I am anxiously waiting a shipment that I ordered for MUSHER's SECRET WAX. Newfs told me about this product last winter. It seems like a great thing, as it is a wax that lets the paws breathe, but protects against salt and ice formation on paws. It is used for sled dogs. I will let you know how it works! YES... Mushers Wax is great for dogs paws when they have to walk where ther has been salt put down.. If you google it, you can find places that carry it.... it was made for extreme cold, wet and snow....something else thats works as well is "spray PAM", yup the stuff you get at the grocery store... just a light spray of it on the pads of their feet, what it does is make a barrier between the salt and their paws.... I personaaly like the mushers wax, as it also keeps their paws soft in the winter months, so they don't get dry and crack.....

Never heard about spraying Pam on dog's paws, but I have heard about spraying it on horses hooves to keep the snow from balling up on their feet on winter trails. Good to know - thanks Newfs!

One of my clients uses Musher Wax on her Greyhound Cookie. I have to say it does work, even tho it's a little $$. $14.00 for one.
