We had a German Shepherd that we fed Iams. At 5 yrs old we had to euthanize her. She had cancer. Iams was the only food she ever ate. We have had a lot of other dogs in our lives. They all lived to be at least 10 yrs old. She is the only one that died young. I wouldn't advise anybody to feed their pet Iams. And some of the dogs we had to feed cheap dog food because we had kids at home. But after we got our G Shepherd we could afford a so-called better food. We were told Iams was a better premium food. So we fed her that. We were devastated when we found out she had cancer. So please watch what you feed your fur kids. Try to feed a natural or organic food. Check all ingredients in the food. Make sure they are not harmful to your pets health. If you have time cook for your fur kids. I use all human grade food for my fur kids.

Over the years, IAMS has become known as one of the poorer dog foods to feed a pet. I have always stayed away from it, noting that a very large number of dogs fed that food developed all sorts of tumors. I have largely fed my dogs more organic food over the years and still am concerned about tumors, etc. There is too much grain in many dog foods, even the more natural ones, and that really is not good for dogs, or so I am told by someone who has studied canine nutrition. Dogs do not, she says, need carbohydrates like we do, and it can add to formation of tumors, etc.

I, too, am still in search of good food for my dogs. At the moment I am feeding them Canidae. They love it. There are a great many people feeding pre-packaged "raw diets" now, too, but I have stayed away from that, partly due to expense.

You might be surprised, that feeding your dog a "raw" or "barf" diet is NOT more expensive than a better quality/natural commercial dog food. Dogs that eat a raw diet, eat less, than dry or canned food, because they are eating pure "whole" foods without the added chemicals and junk/fillers in commercially processed dog food.
