Got my 3 yr. old Dobe from a rescue group about 2 months ago. He's had stomach problems (bouts of diarrhea) even before I got him - foster mom had him on Pedigree, had tried Canidae (which the rescue group had recommended) but gave his diarrhea. I've used Iams for my dogs, including my first Dobe, for 28yrs. now but a few people are telling me it's not nutritional dog food. I am adding Nupro now to my dogs food. Any feedback from Dobe owners, or others, is appreciated.

My dobe has a sensitive tummy. When we first got her, many brands of food ago, she had the tendency to hork up the frothy yellow stuff every morning, or at least most mornings. I feed my dogs Chicken Soup For the Soul Dog Food and they do very well with that. Other than that they rarely get any table scraps, just low fat treats. She does tend to be windy - Lordy, she can clear a room. And of all the dogs she eats the most grass. Not sure any of this will help - just my dobe experience.

You might try asking your Vet if putting your dog on Prescription Science Diet - ID will help. It's for dogs that have having stomach / intestinal problems. One of my dogs had colitus and terrible diarrhea, and the ID food worked. Once you get it under control, you can gradually start introducing new food, and see what food may be causing it, assuming that it is a food problem. Could be another problem altogether.

Thanks for the responses. I've been scrolling down some of the postings and came to the one re: IAMS and no, I didn't go to see the testings on the animals, I'll take your word for it. Plus it was posted about the ingredients from China. So, I guess I will be using something different anyway.

Hi Dobeluvr I use Flint river ranch, it is a small company they only use human grade quality ingreadants (spelled wrong when are they going to get a spell check on this board) any who. It's realy good stuff and you dont have to worry about the recall stuff with them. However I dont know how it would be for your dogs stomach issues. You can check them out at http://www.flintriver.com/ . I dont know about Prescription Science Diet but Science Diet was on the recall list as well. Quick

Prescription Diet makes about 25-30 different types of cat and dog food. There was a recall on one particular type, it was a certain canned cat food, don't remember which type. That one was the only one effected in the recall. Prescription Science Diet is only available at a Vets Office, each particular type of food is formulate for a certain illness with a dog or cat.

Newfs, Science Diet prescription was the only dry food associated with the recall, and it was Felind m/d for diabetic management. I used to work for a pet supply store, and at one point had the list memorized, so I could answer the phone calls into the store. Cathy and the Crew and the Orphans too!

I got my first dog from a local shelter where he was fed all kinds of food. He had major bouts of diahrea & ear/skin allergies for quite awhile until we found a natural dog food with human grade ingredients & no grains or fillers. He soon improved & all three have been doing really well on Evo. Switching foods should be a slow process, somewhere over the course of a week, mixing the old with the new, reducing the old til he does well on the new one. Mind you my dog's not a dobe but a husky mix so I don't know if this is any help. I do know he didn't do well on Science Diet, even the allergy mix didn't work, think it had too much grain for him. Just my two cents.

You bring up a good point - regardless of the breed, switching over to a new food needs to be done slowly.

Hi, I'm just trying adding canned pumpkin for my new hound and it seems to be helping the character of stools. About 1 tablespoon/meal. I had heard of this from neighbors and did find it noted on a web site. I, too, have had dobes for many years, they do tend to sensitive stomachs. Some of the canned food are probably ok and certainly more palatable, but I'm lazy and try to stay with quality dry food. You may find the dog's digestive system is less irritated if the food is wet with warm water. Then there's the question of elevating his food bowl (and water bowl). I would not get too wound up in the recent recall. Any of the namebrands are as safe as any. Look for a "seal of approval" from, I think it's called AFCO, an industry group that reviews dog food quality. Of course, if you've got lots of time on your hands you can go to a homemade food, raw chicken or ground beef, plus vegetables. For some reason, rice is good for an irritated stomach. I did the raw food with one older, sick dog, at least he enjoyed his meals! Good luck. Herb

An update on this subject - first, thanks to all for the response. I decided to switch to California Natural, slowly, and all is good so far. I would recommend it.

I don't have a Dobie now. But I have had them before. Our male Dobie had a touchie stomache too. I used a lot of natural unsweetened applesauce in his food. It really helped with the diarhea. And about Iams dog food we raised a G Shep on Iams from the time she was a puppy til she had to be euthanized at 5 yrs old. Our vet said she was full of cancer. I wouldn't reccomend Iams to anybody for their pets. And Iams was one of the fods that was on the recall. I alternate between raw food and natural or organic foods for my 2 GSheps. I lost 2 dogs this last year. One was almost 13 yrs old and the other one was10. The GShep that had cancer is the only dog we have had die before the age of 10. And We have had a lot of dogsin our lives. It is better to feed good food, even if it costs more. It saves on vet bills. I also supplement my pets with multi-vitamins and Brewers yeast/garlic tablets.Better food will prolong your pets lives.

My daughter said sweet potato is also good for diahrea and stomach problems. I forgot to mention in my first reply, that Our Male Dobie lived to be almost 15 yrs old.
