First of all, what's wrong with fixing this guy? You don't want him going after bitches. I don't know his age, but neutering can only help marking, aggression, running, etc., etc.--at least up to about 4 years. Sometimes it has truly amazing results.
But, realistically, you're going to have to do some training, too. Go back to very basic housetraining: tightly scheduled food and water, confinement when not being ACTIVELY watched, and run him outside anytime you catch him even looking at a vertical surface. Take him out on a leash and to one spot rather than allowing him to roam the yard.
This does appear to be male marking rather than accidents, from what you write. In these cases, I feel it is appropriate to discipliine when he tries in the house. A firm NO!, a can with pennies thrown at his feet. He is trying to be dominant and you must make it clear that this is YOUR territory. I would do a scruff shake, but I don't know the size or nature of this creature; you may get a response and would need to be able to handle it.
Finally, if he starts targetting particular spots, I would tape up aluminum foil; the noise seems to disturb many dogs.
Breed, age, history, would all help. Please provide as much info as you have.

| i agree with bowwow..neutering your dog is the best thing you can do for you AND for him..i assume since you adopted him that you have no breed contract for him so why not neuter?? it will solve the marking problem! you can get a low cost neuter certificate from www.friendsofanimals.org. good luck. | |

| | I have a question that is similar to the original posters question. We just got a male adult Beagle about a month ago. We've always had female dogs. He is neutered and is very house broken. However, if we take him to someone elses house that allows us to bring our dogs he tends to mark his territory in their house within a few minutes. It's embarassing. I try to take him in the house and then take him outside that way he can do his business and show him where he needs to go while we're there. He still goes in the house and urinates anyway. Anyone have any suggestions or advice?
