| | I'm in the process of designing a new house and want to put in a doggie door. Does anyone know the best way to incorporate the door? What is the best kind of door to use? Any info would be greatly appreciated! | | | |

| I've had two different kinds of Dog Doors in houses I've lived in. The first one I had installed in a metal door that went from a bathroom directly to my fenced back yard. That worked great, and it was the only door that exited to my yard. In my current home, I have a Dog Door in my sliding glass door.(this is a separate glass panel that sits on the tracks and butts up against the regular glass door.) Again, this was the only door that went directly out to my fenced yard, so I had no choice.
The door in the glass slider was more expensive (approx $200, but a friend of mine installed it, and it is something I can take with me if I move.) The one for the metal door was only about $50, but I paid to have someone install it- which was about $40 at the time.)
Dog/Pet doors can be bought at most pet stores or home improvement centers. Anymore, I couldn't live without one! They offer a lot of freedom ... and relief since you don't have to worry about rushing home from work to let your pets out. AND, it only takes a few minutes to train them how to use it.
Just like with anything else, you need to be a responsible pet owner and insure the yard is safe, and that any fencing you have is secure. (I had one small dog who found a loose panel and pushed on it to get out. The little escape artist just went to my front porch, and waited for me to come home, but that definitely scared me. No more escapes since.)
Hope this helps -- good luck!
