I am 18 years old and if you read my profile you can plainly see I love animals! After graduating I held off on college to be sure I was heading in the right direction. Now I'm just kinda stuck. I know I want a career in the field of animal welfare. But, I'm not sure exactly where, and I'm clueless on the best way to obtain it. My ideal future is in rescue. I live in Georgia and would rather not go out of state. Can anyone help me? Tracy Lee

Tracy Lee, Have you thought of taking classes for vet tech? There are also schools to become a professional dog trainer or how about animal behavior? Rescue is tough as you cannot make a living at it. A majority of the rescues are non-profit and all donations go to the care of the animals in the rescue. Rescues are always looking for volunteers that have the expertise to obedience train or work with behavorial problems. I think you could be a great asset to any rescue with those skills. I'm sure there are other areas you could pursue and someone may come up with more ideas. Don't give up on any type of education!! Becky

Tracy Lee, Try the website for Fulton County Animal Services As operated by Southern Hope Humane Society. They seem like they are trending toward becoming a progressive animal shelter. I would check out the HSUS website http://www.hsus2.org/sheltering/general/shelter_employment.html and http://www.americanhumane.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pa_shelter_services_jobopps the American Humane website for job opportunities with shelters in your area. I ditto the comment on rescue. It is difficult to start off unless you have a solid base of Money behind you. You spend much more than you ever bring in on adoption fees. Also many shelters are looking for college degrees in animal husbandry or similar fields or business type degrees. You may want to also consider dog training schools for experience a much needed service for shelters. And of course vet tech or veterinarian school. If you are ready to work first, trying getting a job in a progressive shelter and then go from their and expand your education based on your area of interest. Columbus GA is also breaking ground on a brand new facility in September, a partnership with the County and PAWS Columbus, which is a wonderful organization. Good Luck. Susanne
