Hi Everyone, I am going to Montreal for a while to work and would like to bring one of my dogs with me. I have experience in transporting dogs on the same flights with me, but it becomes an extremely difficult maneuver when dealing with customs, baggage, taxis, etc. when you're only one person. Additionally, I worry quite a bit in these circumstances, as you don't know how well they are treated, what the climate conditions are, and so on. Does anybody have any experience in sending dogs separately via courier and could you please recommend a reputable company for this sort of thing? I would imagine that this sort of thing happens a lot when adopting dogs from out-of-state, etc. Thanks in advance!

What is the reason to take the dog? Would he/she be more comfortable at home? I would never put my dog on a plane or trust them in someone else's hands I did not know. Because if it were me knowing they were safe at home is better in my own mind and theirs. That's just my opinion though.

When I moved to Louisiana I had to have my dog Luna transported here via plane from Maui. I was already here and I had to have family send her to me later. I looked into the courier services offered but found that I didn't think the expense would get her better care. If you go onto any airline's website they will have information about transporting animals. All animals are transported as cargo unless they are very small and can travel in the cabin with you. I chose to go with Continental because they had more information and seemed to me to be better informed about pet travel, including their PetSafe program. I don't know what the specific requirements are for transporting a dog into Canada, I believe Canada has some breed restrictions. I do know that all airlines require the dog to have a Health Certificate issued by a veterinarian usually within 10 days prior to travel. I had to get a Rabies Certificate for Luna because Hawaii does not have Rabies and therefore does not vaccinate for it regularly. I also had to get a climate certificate stating that she was allowed to travel in conditions over 85 degrees for short periods of time. Most airlines will not permit an animal to travel to a destination that is going to be too hot or too cold without a veteriarian issuing a climate certificate of some kind. Another thing to keep in mind is short nosed breeds, such as pugs and boxers, are not permitted on many airlines because they can have respiratory problems. Some airlines also have breed restricions. I know Continental allows the short nose breeds but they have special requirements, but they do not allow adult pit bulls or bulldog breeds at all. You might find http://www.pettravel.com/airline_rules.cfm useful, but your airline will be able to tell you exactly what the requirements are for your dog and destination. Best of luck!

Yes, transporting a dog like this is never a fun thing, but it's a better alternative to leaving him back home. If I take him with me, he has the opportunity to go on long, daily walks, with a nice, snowy winter to play in. He's done this a couple of times already, so he's used to it. I can't imagine him liking it, however! I was just curious as to how people did this sort of thing when adopting dogs from out of state.
