I just got a black Lab from a shelter. He makes number 4. He is a very big boy. He is going to me 2 as close as we can figure. he was dropped at the shelter when he was 3 months old, and except for 3 days. when some one took him and brought him back he has lived there. They did trian him pretty well. He is a pretty good boy. The problem is i can't seem to get him to stay in the yard. I have a very large yard. he has lots of room to run. But he doesn't always come when i tell him to. We live up north in wi. and we have some people that come up accross the road during the summer. They have a dog and when Murray hears there dog barking he wants to take off. Any ideals on how i can trian him to stay in his own yard? Tomarrow will be 2 weeks since We have had him.
Dorothy.
ps I have the same problem with my cocker. I have given up with him and i just tie him out. after a year of trying. my other 2 do fine.

Is your Murray neutered? That helps a lot ..

If he's only been with you for two weeks I think you are expecting too much.  Have you worked with him to teach him where the yard boundaries are?  If so, how?

If he's lived most his life in a shelter it's going to take time and training.  His whole world just changed for the better.  But it can take up to a month for a newbe to settle in to a new living situation.

Thanks for your reply. yes I have /still do everyday work with him. I take him for walks around the yard, on his leash. he does very  well. The shelter worked with him on training, they said he loves his walks. So I was taking him twice a day. I no longer have been doing that. For now. Someone told me that if you take your dogs for walks out of the yard they will go out of the yard when your not looking. I kind of wonder about that because i use to take my Cocker and he did the same thing. But my other 2 do not, but then I didn't take them . I hate to think of never taking Murray on his walks that he loves so much, and he is a good walker. Listens very well. untill he is loose in the yard and hears the neighbors dog bark. He seems to be getting better the last few days. But I still don't trust him.

I don't think the walks are the issue. Continue training on the come command - food (treats) for labs is a big motivator. Hopefully the desire to come to you for the treat will outweigh the desire to go visit the neighbors dog. Tie-offs or a dog run might be needed until he can be trusted.
