I have complete sympathy - I used to live in Oregon and my then puppy (he's 6 now) Jade thought goose poop was the most delicious snack he had ever encountered. He did wind up on antibiotics twice as a result of his exploratory snacking. On the flip side, my mom's Coton Shana gobbles up horse poop (not to mention coyote poop and any other disgusting thing she can find) and never suffers from any ill effects. Since there are some potentially negative side effects from your fur baby munching on goose poop, I would recommend two courses of action: 1) If your dog knows the command "leave it" (or something to that effect), use that command every time he goes near the poop and offer something that has even more value than the poop (a really, really loved treat or an absolute favorite toy works well). Try to keep that treat or toy in reserve for the times you want to lure your dog away from the tempting poop. If your dog does not know a command like "leave it", a good trainer who uses positive reinforcement can help you teach your dog pretty quickly. 2) Spray the poop with something bitter like Fooey, Bitter Apple, or Chew Stop (your local pet store will have at least one of those). Your dog will pretty quickly start to associate the taste of the poop with the bitterness of the spray and should start leaving the poop alone in search of tastier, or at least healthier, options. Good luck, Tara (human) and Jade (the furry one) |
