| | hi- i am sure this is well covered, so please forgive me! i have a 7 1/2 yr old rescue beagle/yellow lab male (have had him since 1/06)- and he started peeing in the house. it started out as once a month since july or august, then this month its been 4 times. same spot every time. he has been waking me up in the middle of the night to go pee, and sometimes i work 11 hr days so i come home mid-day to let him out. with these new patterns established, i am wondering if he got himself used to going every 5-6 hrs. however, he seems to know he shouldnt have peed there when i come home- i go over to the spot, call him, and he runs around like a crazy dog with his ears back, almost like he is afraid i am going to hit him or something- then he comes over & sits in the pee. i have never hit him, have rarely had to yell at him because he is usually so good. any idea what could be going on- and more importantly, how do i correct it? he used to be able to go 9-11 hrs, and i used to get full nights of sleep! he hasnt woken me in the past 2 nights, but did pee during the day ( i was gone 8 hrs both days). i am taking him to the vet next week to rule out uti or whatever- but he doesnt seem to feel sick, he is himself otherwise. i cant discern if its behavioral or if he just has to go! i am thinking i need to start with a professional rug cleaning to get the pee smell out? then what? i hate to crate him- he has had the run of the apt since we have been together. should i gate him in my small kitchen? i cant think of anything else that has changed? am wondering if i should try pee pads for the times he cant wait, in addition to our regular walks. oh why cant i work from home!!
thanks again!! elaine | | | |

| | The worst part is it could be any of the things you mentioned. I would first rule out any medical issues. If that's not it then you have go through the process of figuring out what behavioral problem it is. Crating while it sounds bad, may help if it's behavioral to curb him from doing it and get him back on track. You also might want to look at how much water he's consuming and limit it earlier in the evening before bedtime to help prevent him from needing to go in the middle of the night.

| | thanks for your reply.... ends up he has a very nasty UTI... so i am praying the antibiotics help- in 2 weeks he gets tested again, if its not cleared, they said it could be stones, i read online a few other worse case scenarios- so hoping for the best. thanks again... | | | |

| | UTIs can be caused by waiting too long to urinate (although it sounds like you're doing everything you can by coming home at lunch). Have you thought about a pet door? www.FixDogProblems.com/pet-door.shtml | | | |

| I have found a formula that will help keep the odor out after you have the carpet cleaned. This works for me and I have 8 cats and 3 house dogs.
Use an 8 oz or 16 oz. containor that is clean preferably glass.
Add 7.5 oz of 3% hydrogen peroxide which is the equivalent to one half inch from the top of an 8 oz container.
Add 1 level teaspoon of baking soda
Add 1 small drop of liquid hand soap
Mix using a plastic spoon for one minute
MAKE SURE YOU TEST THIS IN AN AREA THAT YOU CAN'T SEE TO BE SURE IT DOESN'T BLEACH OUT YOUR CARPET
I have beige carpeting and it has never been a problem for bleaching out.
This formula has helped me to be able to keep all my pets.
I also use hydrogen peroxide on my carpet to clean up cat vomit and dog vomit. I use it straight but you could mix water with it. ALWAYS TEST IN AN AREA THAT YOU CAN'T SEE TO BE SURE IT DOESN'T BLEACH OUT THE CARPET.
Hope this helps. | | | |

| | I am so glad that you solved that problem. He's probably had this UTI for months and just held it in. If only they could talk! For the most part, if nothing else has changed, a change in behavior like that usually means a medical issue....at least that is what I have found in my experience. They really don't want to be anything but good and have us love them. Hope he heals quickly. Unfortunately, he needs lots of water while he is on the anitbiotics so you might be inconvenienced a little bit for a bit longer. Wish I could teach them to use the toilet! My old dog used to go into the shower to pee when he was alone too long! Now that was a trained dog!
Regards and good luck
