I have a 10 month old pit bull terrier who is is constantly on the look out for her next chew toy!  I have two dogs, one is a pit mix 3 yrs old and Mahina my pitty.  They are mainly house dogs, but because the puppy is always getting into something, we leave them on the porch during the day we are at work and they have the run of our front yard.  Everyday when we come home it's always, "ok, what did you do today!" she has dug at least 20 holes in the yard - probably tryting to get under the house, she learned to get into our closed shoe rack (we thought we were hiding the shoes from her) and has eaten every piece of footwear we have ever owned...huh...we know she;ll grow out of it eventually but my question is does anyone have any ideas as to how we can keep her occupied while we are away? I know she's bored - she can't harass my 3 yr old because he sleeps all day until we get home - so she looks for something to do - I need to give her something that will stimulate her and keep her busy but can't be  easily chewed and devoured.  She has even gotten into my husbands recycled soda cans and has chewed them til there are just shards left! (and not one cut in her mouth!) please help! I'm afraid she'll get into something really dangerous and we won't be home to save her!

Ok Paka

Why is it that your dogs always want what they're NOT supposed to have ?

I have one just like you but I'm home all day.  First thing is a needed long walk to tire him/her out in the morning before you go off to work.  To get rid of some of that energy.

A KONG toy could help, put some kinda treat in there.  I've bought the supposedly indestrucable chew toys, but they eventually get chewed.  Big bones keep them occupied (only buy he cooked ones) that have been baked and are a great way to keep them occupied for awhile.

Keeping him crated during the day will help you avoid all the chewing and destruction until he grows out of some of it.  Mine still goes after any kind of plastic, such as remotes (he's chewed 2) plastic drains in the backyard or lots of plastic toys of my grandaughters.  After having pits for over 13 years and having some destruction (he first chewed on the corners of windows and walls) crates are a life saver.  Most dogs sleep when your not home anyway.  It avoids having him hurt (he could swallow something or hurt himeslf while your not home) and saves your yard and house.  Both mine are under 2 years old and are definitely crated when we are not home.

p.s.  Come on over and I'll show you some of the teeth marks and window sils chewed on

Hope this helps.

I walk them both - seperatly - every day AFTER work for 45 minutes each, along with fetch for hours. But thats at the end of the day.  I've thought about walking her in the morning before I go to work, but that would be at 4 a.m., my gosh! that's a crazy hour, but I agree that that would make more sense.  as far as crating her, your the 3rd person to suggest that and it makes sense also.  I'm going to look into both - thanks for the suggestion!
