I am a new member of this site. I wanted to tell everyone about how I got my 2 babies, Sugar and Spice. I had lost one of my cats, Dawn, to kidney failure in May, 1998. I still had my other cat, Elvis Purrsley (E.P.) We adopted him on the tenth anniversary of Elvis's death, and he purred like a truck. Then, in December, 1999, I lost E.P. unexpectedly to an inoperable translucent tumor. I was dangerously depressed and felt like I had this giant hole in my heart. In February, one of the ladies at my vet's office called me and asked if I was ready for another cat. I told her I didn't think so. Then she told me that a customer had brought 2 cats out there to board them and had abandoned 1 of them. She said the cat was 6 months old and had been in a cage for 2 months. I told her I would come out and see the cat. This beautiful little grey tabby kitten melted my heart, and I knew we needed each other. I told them to spay her and that I would get her the next week, since I was going out of town for several days. I knew I wanted another kitten so they would have each other to play with and would keep each other company. I was then working part time as a secretary at a real estate office. One of the agents had had a Siamese cat come near house. She had kittens, and they were living in a drain out there. Joni was feeding them. She told me she would like to get the kitten and find homes for them. I suggested that she get a humane trap to accomplish this. She trapped one little solid-black female kitten but never saw the others again. She then got the mother cat, also. She gave the mother to some of her real estate customers. She told me she didn't want to give the kitten she had trapped to anyone but me, because she knew a good home she would have with me. This little kitten became my Sugar. Both my cats open drawers, cabinets, folding door closets, even file cabinet drawers and dresser drawers. Spice started this, and Sugar (being half Siamese) has carried it to a whole new level. I have child-proof locks on all my kitchen cabinets to keep them out. Several times I have returned home to find all my socks scattered on the bedroom floor. Since the dresser drawer is somewhat heavier then some others, I wondered how Sugar had managed to get it open. Then she showed me. She put her right front paw in the handle and pulled, but the drawer did not come out. She then braced her left front paw on the drawer below and pulled out the sock drawer with the right one. She is just like a monkey when it comes to using her paws. Spice will be 9 years old in August, and Sugar will be 9 in December. They are very loving to each other, although sometimes that chase each other pretending to be mad. When I first got them, they kept me laughing with their wrestling and chasing. They have outgrown a lot of this unfortunately, but they still give me laughs, love, and so much enjoyment. They are the light of my life. Catlady43, Barbara >^..^< |
