A friend of mine at work told me this wonderful story today. This story is in her own words and is posted here in memory of of the "Best Dog Ever" a beloved Chocolate Lab named Max.

When we got Max he was kind of thrust upon us. The people that owned his mother had sent 2 previous litters to the rescue mission and they refused to take any more so they were starving the puppies in hopes that they would just die.

A girl that I worked with who was as my husband calls her a real tree hugger had heard about this litter of dogs and that they couldn't go to the shelter and were going blind from hunger. I said, I'd love to help you but we can't have pets in our apartment. She said, he's going to die, please take him for the weekend, if it doesn't work out, bring him back and I'll keep trying.

I called my husband (who is a sucker for animals) and he said okay. So she brought him in the next day and I fell in love on the spot. He was so scraggly and skinny and his eyes were the brightest green because of the beginning of blindness. I snuck him into our apartment and prayed he wouldn't make a peep. He never did. Never barked at all.

My husband came home and Max stretched across the room to sniff at him then ran back to me. I had to get back to work so I left; but when I came back both Max and he were sprawled out on the couch eating crackers and cheese. It was so adorable.

We were the lucky ones! He was a doll and he was such an angel. We were living in Vermont at the time and when we took him to the vet the day after we got him he was going blind from hunger, but the vet checked him over and said "you wait and see, this will be the best dog ever." And he was!!!

(He didn't end up going blind either after we got him on a regular diet his eyesight and manginess got better).

The landlord never found out about him - though I hated doing that. But we left the place cleaner than we started and since Max never barked there no one ever knew!

I wish my Max wasn't gone. He was the love of our lives. Pre-kids; so the sun rose and set on him.

Max passed away a few years ago and he is loved and missed so much by his Mom and her family. Rest in Peace sweet Max.

It's so wonderful when people help animals in need. I wish there were no animal abuse anywhere, but caring souls make up for it.
