Although there are only a dozen animal blood banks in the country, I am privileged to have one fairly close by. I used to work there and have remained a member of their volunteer program. I have also adopted five retired feline donors and a very large canine donor. One of the cats, Nemo, and the dog, Dillon, have crossed the Rainbow Bridge in the last few years. Four of the boys are still with us and you can see them in my photos - Ace, Conqueso, Tabby and Maximillian. The local blood bank is an amazing program rescuing cats and dogs from shelters and giving them a second chance. They must pass a thorough blood screening, serve time in isolation and then pass the blood screening again before they donate to other animals. After serving a year in the program, they are available for adoption at a very small fee. They continue to live at the blood bank if not adopted - none are euthanized unless there is a medical need. My retired donors have all been very loved members of my family. They delight and amuse me as well as give lots of love. All together, the six donors I have adopted have given 497 lifesaving packets of blood products throughout their careers. That a lot of saved dogs and cats out there! They are my furry heroes. |
