Dog dies in the care of groomers!  Police refuse to file a complaint.  Owner/doctor suddenly disappears for the day.  I've contacted the Animal Legal Defense Fund & the BBB, just waiting for answer.  The body of the poor dog is being preserved in case a necropsy needs to be performed.  I fear that without a police report, I'm in big trouble.  Can anyone please help me, or give me some advice?

What help do you need? Was the dog abused? Or was it just an unfortnate unforseen death that happens at groomers , boarding kennels, and at the vets office from time to time?

This is so very sad. I'm sorry, I have no advice, I know the 'law' is so very different when it comes to animals.  In most states our animals are considered 'property'.  I hope the dog didn't suffer in any way.

I have not heard about this ... what happened? I work with a few lawyers and maybe can help - give me a run down of the story please? I know there was just a case in LI with a shih tzu that was in a cage and was burned to death because of a dryer and the only thing the owner got back was the price of the puppy so what is a 3 yr old dog worth? Well they decided it was $350.00 -- no pain or suffering no foul - which I think is rediculous, but the law in every state is different. I told the person to go to small claims and push the pain and suffering - not sure what happened after that, but maybe we can help --

Sorry to hear about your dog was this a regular groomer that your dog was use to going to on a regular basis? Not sure how old your dog was either, there is no mention of the age. I am also not sure what you mean when you say YOU will be in BIG trouble if there is no report?  It can also be a very stressful situation to a dog, if it is just dropped at a strange place (grooming facility)....

OMG!!  What happened? I also work with a Lawyer and I am in the Legal Field as well, I do not work with pet cases but I can ask here. Please provide what has taken place. In the mean time there must be an ASPCA or Animal League in your area that you can call and find out the laws in your area. OR, you can always be the 1st to make a case yourself and find a lawyer willing to back you...

Please let us know.. My heart and prays to you and your family...  I will be lighting my Candle of you and your fur-friend tonight... Im Sorry for your lose..

I will be in big trouble without a police report because no legal action will be possible.  I guess stressful isn't the word I would use, more like dead.  The dog is used to going to a groomer, never minded it.   I feel sorry for the dogs that follow that could end up hurt or dead.

Thank you for your concern.  You are so right about the laws to protect animals.  I hate to admit it, but in Mississippi the only laws are, don't steal someone elses animals, and don't beat them.  We can leave them tied to trees for their entire 12-16 years with little food or water, or never take them to the vet, heck, we can even have them on a 4 foot rope for their entire lives!  It's rediculous!  Well, sorry, just had to vent.  Thank you for your sympathy.

I think contacting all the main groups especailly PETA, HSUS, Best Friends, then the media on this will get the police moving on the report -- I would go to the police station and speak with the chief about it too. Tell him that you have plans to go to the media and / or other groups and get this noted - violent act etc ... keep me updated with the autopsy report. I will discuss this around my office this afternoon and figure some more steps to take . No worries we are all friends here .
Thank you Shevelle for using the candle burning here too - that is excellent.
Have a great one guys and I'm working on this and checking into some of Mississippi laws to see where we can push a little further.
Love ya Fran

AFTER you have all of the facts on cause of death...

start saturating your local big wigs asking where the pet-protection laws are in Mississippi- which is what Peta and HSUS does. See if PETA has an 800 number, so you're not waiting and waiting for a reply. Your laws need to be changed or created, so go to the people who have that power in your state. Keep on until you get answers!! This is beyond criminal-
post it all over the Internet because someone somewhere might know specifically who you can confront about this death. Or, they may have had the same tragedy and give you needed info.

It sounds like MAJOR petition time...and AA members are good at helping spread the word about any abuse/cruelty of an animal!

First, we want ALL of you to know that never before have we experienced such a loving bunch of 'cheerleaders' like the people at Animal Attraction!  Living in Mississippi, and having worked at a Humane Society, we have learned the hard way that the percentage of animal lovers that will actually step up to the plate for you, is few and far between.  Sadly, the mentality down here is 'see nothing, hear nothing, speak nothing'!  Thanks to all of you, especially 'whimperwoo', 'shevelle', 'kwndog', 'savelives', 'bearandnoel', & 'Newfs', there will be a few new names and faces appearring at the doors of our governers & legislators.  We have taken all of your well wishes, advice, and information and put it all in our pockets to use in a positive way, and that's to fight for every animals rights!  Having said that, we want to let you all know the results of the NECROPSY.  Determined cause of death was an anurism in the right lung.  The reason for the shady activities of the Vet and his staff was a result of them walking away from the dog, leaving him unattended, and apparantly returning to find him laying dead while still tied up.  They assumed that he strangled to death in their care, and wrong though it may be, pannicked, and wouldn't return phone calls, which in and of itself set off red flags everywhere.

On one hand, we regret getting everyone up in arms.  Yet, on the other hand, you all have proven to us that there is still someone out there that cares, and more importantly, will go above and beyond the call of duty for little ole us down here in Mississippi.  I will be honest with you all, the response you all gave made me cry.  We thought we were alone, and here you all come to do what little you could to help.  WE LOVE ALL OF YOU VERY MUCH!

We hope all of you will still remain our friends, and remember, if ANY of you need our help, YOU GOT IT!  We also ask you to join us in a fight for animals in Mississippi.  It's long overdue, now a definite fire has been lit under my butt, and I'm going to fight til it's time for me to leave this earth.  Please keep loving the animals, and take a lesson from us, you're never alone!

We Soooo Love You Guys!

Jeannie,

We all care, that's what makes 'pet parents' so special!  We have to speak and take action for our babies who can't speak for themselves.

If you need anything, if there is anything I can do at all, please let me know.  When all that horrible news came out about that MONSTER, Michael Vick; I wrote to the Attorney General, NIKE, Reebok, the NFL and anyone else I could think of to be sure that he would not be able to hurt another animal, or profit from them in any way.

I'll light another candle for you tonight. "Candles for care" is a great forum!

Hi everyone,  I am the aunt of the owner of Maggie, the sweet little dog that died at the groomer's.  I can't tell you enough how you have all touched my heart with your responses  to this tragedy.  I just read where Jeannie, who is surely becoming one of my heroes, has kept you all up to date on the situation.  The result of her death was an aneurism in her right lung not strangulation as the groomer's stated.  I still find it all a little fishy but am also glad to know the true cause of death and to know that she did not suffer and had a quick death.  I know it helps my niece greatly.  She was feeling very guilty.  I am surely going to direct her to this wonderful site so she can see all of the wonderful, caring people that exist and truly care about the welfare of every animal.  Jeannie has been an angel through all of this and I truly cannot thank her enough.  She is a wonderful, caring person and true friend.  We are going to bury Maggie's remains in our little pet cemetery so the kids can visit her whenever they come over.  They were just devastated by the incident and miss her greatly.  Thank you all again.  Your kindness and caring have touched our hearts and will remain with us forever.

Response to Newfs: Maggie had been to this groomer several times and would have been 1 year old yesterday.

Lemme see if i got this right...... The dog was ill and started to show signs of dying and the groomers panicked and left the dog???   At best I would ruin their reputation and let the public know that they are not a very good groomer if they do not help an animal, regarless if they could have saved him or not!!!

Then I would have a little "come to jesus meetin" with them on a more personal level
