A few months ago I went to adopt one of my cats, Jaz, at the local SPCA here in North Bay, and found that some of their rules are ridiculous when it comes to being able to bring home your chosen friend.

When I had finally chosen Jaz - althought then she was called Ebony - I sat in the lobby with my boyfriend filling in a three page application in order to take her home. Understandable. They need to know that they aren't going to be seeing this animal again due to neglect or abandonment.

But while I was waiting, a man came in with this incredibly wonderful black labrador and wanted to surrender the dog due to constant bad behaviour in his home. Slightly understandable, although, a dog can be trained.
Anyways, he was denied to surrender the dog because it was a Saturday and the SPCA's manager would not be in until Monday.

The same thing went for me - I could not take Jaz home because it was a Saturday.

What I don't understand is why they would allow these people to take the animal back when it is clear that they do not want them. This is when, in my mind, the man drives out in the middle of nowhere and let's the dog go because he:
a) doesn't have the tolerance for the dog.
b) can save a few bucks rather than paying to surrender it.

I find this to be ridiculous. They should be willing to take animals at any time during their normal hours of operation - if not 24/7.
Just looking for anyone else's opinion.

At our SPCA you cannot take an animal home for 24hrs after the adoption paperwork is APPROVED. You should never be allowed to take an animal home the same day IMO.

As for surrendering them, I'm sure they just didnt have the staff available that day to take the dog in. Perhaps they should have given the guy some information on how to train his dog instead of being irresponsible.

I dot one of my bunnies from a shelter in Tampa, 3 1/2 hours away from where I was. They wouldn't let me take her until she was spayed, which meant coming to pick her up a week later. IT was definitely annoying since it was a full 7 hours (there and back) in the car the next week but in the end I decided in the greater scheme of things it was the right policy. I would have spayed her - I already had my other bunny neutered - but they didn't know me.

I guess the nice part about technology is you can now fill out applications online... a KEY factor for me as we live in the middle of nowhere, and when we decide to get another pet, we'll definetly be doing online apps. Why bother to make the drive if we can't have anything?

Some of the rules are definetly weird... but I think it's better to be safe than sorry. As for the man with the lab... I think they certainly should have given him pamphlets and contacts for training people/centers rather than help him surrender it.

I adopted my female st. poodle from the ASPCALA....after watching and listening to numbers of people applying for pets....I am glad they have clear policies and procedures in place. It seems some canines are more intelligent than those who wish to adopt them.

While some of the procedures seem bothersome, it certainly weeds out those who are not seriously committed to caring for the pet they choose.

I know the SPCA where I live, you can not just walk in, fill out an application and walk out with an animal the same day.... I don't know about other places, but this one "does" call the references people put down on their application, and that all takes time!!! I also don't think they have the funds or man-power to just take any animal that is going to be surrendered at any moment in time.....

I agree, policies are in place for a reason, and are a good thing
