What are some games you play with your dog? Especially those that aid in obedience training? For instance, I play "Hide and Seek" with Lady. I put her in Sit and Stay. I walk away and hide with some treats. When I get in my spot, I give her the release. Then I call "Come here Lady". When she finds me, I tell her how good she is for coming and reward her. I've been learning others but I'd love to know what you use to keep your dog (or other pet!) happy and motivated in the form of games?

Juliette, my games with the pets consist more of "oh please, come back here with my important piece of paper" or "oh no, please don't hack up a furball on the freshly cleaned blanket" ;)

I play a game with Zima..she likes what I call "Tuggy Towel" I tied a knot in the end of an old towel and she chases that around, tugs on it and generally wears herself down. I work obedience into it too. She is learning to wait, sit and down in order to get play time. She does a few minutes of serious work then she gets rewarded by either a yummie treat or her toy She also likes chasing a tennis ball down the stairs and bringing it back up.

You can also hide small treats in the room...like an egg hunt. I have my Tessa 'sit' and watch me hide them then when I'm done I tell her to find them. She loves this! We also play frisbee which is a good mental and physical game. Another thing I do which Tessa is not very good at is hiding a treat under something....a towel, a basket, etc. She sees me hide the treat and can find it under a towel but can't seem to figure out how to knock over that basket...even with a demo. Oh well. Hope these ideas help.

Hi Juliette - besides the usual boring ones (fetch, tug, etc) I play hide-N-seek - the trick is getting away from them long enough to hide LOL Zorro always seems to find me first - must be cuz he's part herding dog.

hey

me & the Boyz do the usual, frisbee, ball, etc...Sampson joins in when it's fetch time (believe it or not) ... but if Blu wants the ball and Sampson has it...he'll put his mouth around Sampson's head to make him drop it

oh, and we got some mean singing on cue skills as well- comes in handy when we have to leave a happy birthdya message on someones voice mail

Hiya Juliette ~~ Congrats on your new pup Mocha ! You can't go wrong with any kind of shepherd dog ;)

Nova and I have been playing " Fetch" , "Catch me if you can " and since she loves the garden hose so much I'm trying to make a game of "Watering the Veggie Garden ";) She's doing well ;)

With my three Jack Russells I have had to develop alot of games to keep them happy and behaved. Especially Petey. Every night at dinner time Petey has a routine of tricks he performs. I hand feed him half of his food. Before his bowl gets put down he high jumps, spins around and then gives 3 more high jumps. He then gets a bit of food from my hand. Then for each hand of food he does a trick, high five, shake, turn around, down/stay/come, weave between my legs, etc... He then has to sit/stay while I rinse off my hands until I give him the OK command and he finishes his dinner. Petey is an agility dog and being a JRT extremely hyper and easily distracted, so teaching him alot of tricks has helped with his obedience, attention, and hyperness! He loves to do his tricks! He also loves to play with a soccer ball and frisbee. A good JRT is a tired JRT!
