Yesterday we finally decided that our Golden Retreiver Mugsey should have to fight so hard anymore. We were going to put him down. He'd been diagnosed in October with chronic kidney failure. Realistically he had been losing weight, but this past month has been the hardest. Memorial Day weekend we took him to camp (thinking it would be the last time) I took lots and lots of pictures this time, and he had fun, he laid around a bunch but he did have fun. The last two weeks, he stopped going down the stairs, we moved him down to the family room last week so he wouldn't have to go down the steps.
Friday he stopped eating, Sunday he stopped going outside, and taking any fluids.

We decided it was time, we made the appointment to take him yesterday at 12:15, when we were getting him ready to go, my husband lifted him up, like you would a child, and his head moved once, and that was it, he died right there at home in my husband's arms. I think he was waiting until we were home together, then that was the time to go. Mugsey was 13, and has been a part of our family for almost 7 years. We rescued Mugsey from a home in which he was kept outdoors for every season. We think he had a good life with us, but I thought I had a few more minutes to say goodbye. But I did have time to tell him that I loved him, that he was a good dog, and that if he was ready to go ahead and go.

I never imagine this would be this hard......God I miss him so much

Dear Mugsy's mom, I know.. ((Mugsy's mom)) My german shepherd developed cancer last year. I had her for 8.5 years. She had to be euthanized last October after fighting aggressive cancer for two months.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I lost my oldest cat 2 years ago @ 18 1/2 years old(kidney failure)-still miss her, but, I know I gave her the best life she could have had.  Know in your hearts you did what was best for her.  May you find peace and comfort  in your hearts and know you are not alone.

God bless you and your family.I know what you are going through. We lost 2 last year. Apache 10 yrs old died in his sleep. And Cherokee almost 13 had to be euthanized because of old age hip displaysia. She couldn't walk any more. Apache died the last of May and Cherokee died the last of June. We were heart broken only one month apart we lost 2 of our best friends. We miss them terribly. My heart breaks for all of you.

Thank you all for your kind words. Our beagle Daisy is taking it so hard to. We all know how dogs can get tear marks, well Daisy has just developed these in the last few days. I believe that she too is heartbroken. She sniffs the ground outside constantly looking for him. My heart breaks for her too. They were best friends for the same time we got Mugsey, we had Daisy first.
I've lost loved ones, and know that this will get easier, but right now, my heart is just so sad. I miss my Mugsey :'(

i am so sorry to hear about your loss.  i know it sounds strange, but i am glad he died with you at home- thats one thing i was grateful about with my Ralphie, he didnt leave me to make that decision for him- he left this world in my arms too.  and all i can remember thinking was "this sucks" for days- there are no other words, besides how unfair it is to lose our best friends.  many prayers going out to your family, and daisy- thats got to be very difficult too.  thanks for sharing about your special baby :)
