About a month ago I discovered a growth in my 15 1/2yr old, Yona's, mouth.  From the biopsy we learned that it's a very aggressive, malignant osteosarcoma that had already spread to her lungs.  My vet said it would only be a week, maybe two, until the cancer consumed her.  After nearly 4 weeks she took a turn for the worse last night and even though it breaks my heart, I know what has to be done.  Her euthanasia appointment is tonight.

Yona has been a wonderful and very special dog as a blood donor and foster mom to litters of puppies, kittens, an even ferrets.  Her gentle and loving nature will be greatly missed.

So please say a little prayer for us tonight...we need all the strength we can get to make it through this.

Thank you,

Melissa

My heart goes out to you and your family. This has to be the hardest part of having furry friends. My thoughts and prayers will be with you tonight. Remember all the love she gave you through the years and send her over with all the love and peace you have for her. When you need it most tonight think of all the hugs and love we'll all be sending your way.

Just reading this brings tears to my eyes. They become so much more than just a pet to us, or even a freind. They are family. My prayers are with you, and try to rejoice in the fact that she was sent to bring you joy.

i am so sorry to hear about your Yona.  i hope all of our prayers for you are felt, and that you are able to reflect all of the wonderful love she gave you and so many others.  i cannot personally imagine this intense pain that you are feeling, but i know i will one day as i am living with my first dog.  our thoughts and prayers to you not only tonight, but on the many days to come.  i am also glad that you have other animals there for you to help ease your pain.

Thank you all for your prayers and support. My family was there to be with us (even though we're all grown and living on our own, we still are extremely close and bring our dogs to our weekly family dinners. So my dogs are not only loved by me but also by my entire family). She got to see everyone for hugs and kisses before making the long walk into the appointment room.

On the way in, there was a woman with a box full of black lap puppies..they couldn't have been more than 8 weeks old. Although I saw them, my mind was elsewhere when I felt tension on the leash. When I turned around, my Yona had stopped next to the pups and was licking one on the head in her motherly fashion. It was a bittersweet moment.

The tears haven't stopped and sleep is still hard to come by, but we're making it (oh so slowly). I know the heartbreak and the empty feeling signify all the years of happy memories, slobbery kisses, and love that we shared. And I know that eventually the pain and sorrow will ease. But for now I'm still catching myself looking for her when I come home, waiting to hear her "sing" for her supper, and reaching for her when I wake up during the night.

I am so sorry to hear about Yona. It is heart breaking when we lose a pet. I have been there also, like so many of us on this site, so we understand the pain you are feeling. Yona had a beautiful life with you. All those memories will stay in your heart for-ever.......

My deepest sympathy for you and your family. I'm so sorry about your Yona. Just remember how much love you gave her and she will always be in your heart. She sounds like she was an angel to have been so kind and loving to little puppies she fostered even at the point when she was so ill. I lost my beautiful Keesha in Nov. after 14 years of love from her. I still miss her and know that she gave me the best 14 years I could ever ask for. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

melissa i am so sorry- i know our dogs are playing together waiting for us, but that doesnt help us here.  my ralph died on his own in 2005- i had him for just 5 weeks, and i thought i was going to die too, it was just terrible.  our time together was so great, and he taught me so much.  but he brought my Chance to me which i am forever grateful for- and i know Yona will bring you another special family member when  you are ready.  i am so sorry you had to go through this, that anyone does.  thanks for sharing everything here- in our prayers, elaine & chance
