| I thought it might be fun to talk about song lyrics, lines from literature, poetry, or even movies that we remember and have an influence upon us. One of my favorite lines is from a Bonnie Rait Song: "I can't make you love me if you don't, I can't make your heart feel something it won't"....... sigh There are some lines from a dog poem I recall: "A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun. Too faithful to leave, to frightened to run. He's been here for days now with nothing to do, but sit by the road waiting for you." "You don't write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say." F. Scott Fitzgerald "A woman is the most fiendish instrument of torture ever devised to bedevil the days of man." Oh Brother Where Art Thou JJ | | | |

| I was lucky enough to be raised around great music and great literature. My father still has a music collection that dates back to the late fifties. I grew up listening to the Doors, Stones, Beatles, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Dylan, and so on. His interests were mostly folk, rock, classical and blues. Those are the things I grew to love even though he and I did not always see eye to eye. My older siblings introduced me to music from the eighties when I was young but I still love some of the older songs. Here are a few lyrics that remind me of people here: Karen.... I want a girl with good dividends,
At Citibank we will meet accidentally,
We start to talk when she borrows my pen. She wants a car with a cup-holder armrest,
She wants a car that will get her there.
She's changing her name from Kitty to Karen,
She's trading her MG for a white Chrysler LeBaron I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket. Lala is easy: Whatll you do when you get lonely
No one waiting by your side?
Youve been running and hiding much too long.
You know its just your foolish pride. Layla, you got me on my knees Layla... Jennifer: GENTLE WOMAN, CHILD NO MORE
LOVING FRIEND THAT I ADORE
SINGS A SONG OF LIFE IN STORE
AS SHE SEES HER SPIRIT SOAR. Stacy: You know she thrills me with all her charms
When I'm wrapped up in my baby's arms
My little girl gives me everything
I know that some day she'll wear my ring
So don't bother me man I ain't got no time
I'm on my way to see that girl of mine
`Cause nothing matters in this whole wide world
When you're in love with a Jersey girl Springsteen made this famous, but Tom Waits wrote it. And for you JJ, this one: Sing me a lullaby
Of songs you cannot write
And I will listen for theres beauty where theres love
And in the morning of my life
And in the evening of my day
I will try to understand in what you say... And lastly, a few lines I love for no good reason: Well my time went so quickly,
I went lickety-splickly out to my old 55
As I drove away slowly, feeling so holy,
God knows, I was feeling alive.
Now the suns coming up,
Im riding with lady luck,
Freeway cars and trucks,
Stars beginning to fade,
And I lead the parade also: Well I hope that I dont fall in love with you
cause falling in love just makes me blue,
Well the music plays and you display
Your heart for me to see,
I had a beer and now I hear you
Calling out for me
And I hope that I dont fall in love with you. and lastly: She was 15 years old
And never seen the ocean
She climbed into a van
With a vagabond
And the last thing she said
Was, I love you mom.
And a little rain
Never hurt no one
And a little rain
Never hurt no one All by Tom Waits, I hope to see him perform in St. Louis, or Columbus Ohio in June. Greg PS, for the late Warren Zevon "I want a woman with low self esteem". I've got a .38 special up on the shelf
I'll sleep when I'm dead
If I start acting stupid
I'll shoot myself
I'll sleep when I'm dead All these people with no home to go home to
They'd all like to spend the night with you
Maybe I would, too | | | |

| JJ,
What a great idea! I was also brought up with tremendous music and cultural influences....so much to share.
Where do I start, really? There are so many classic lines of poetry that partnered with music from classic recordings (20-40's) and opera, Elvis to ELO and from Nat King Cole to U2. I can only give a sampling of what makes me shut my eyes and absorb the music:
I'll give you this one. The other's you have to guess.
A). Boston (so hard to pick just one):
Everyday I think of you, You're on my mind. some things in the past Are better left behind Every night I dream of you, Images as clear as day
Can'tcha say you believe in me? Can'tcha see what you mean to me? Can't you see what it means to me? Don't leave me alone tonight 'Cause I still love you
B). Hint: Dolly Parton covered this song on her last album
Love is in the water Love is in the air Show me where to go Tell me will love be there Teach me how to speak Teach me how to share Teach me where to go Tell me will love be there Oh, heaven let your light shine down
C).
Don't judge me You could be me in another life In another set of circumstances Don't judge me One more night I'll just have to take my chances
And no it's just not in my plan For someone to care who I am
D).
I laughed and she'd smile It would last for awhile You don't know what you got till you lose it all again
....
A cool evening dance Listening to the bluegrass band takes the chill From the air till they play the last song I'll do my time Keeping you off my mind but there's moments That I find, I'm not feeling so strong
Listen to the mandolin rain Listen to the music on the lake Listen to my heart break every time she runs away Listen to the banjo wind A sad song drifting low Listen to the tears roll Down my face as she turns to go (I love the idea of actually "hearing" tears rolling.....wow, talk about heartbreak!)
E). This should be easy!!!! Ha, ha!
If you change your mind I'm the first in line Honey, I'm still free Take a chance on me
F).
I look up to the little bird That glides across the sky He sings the sweetest melody It makes me want to cry It makes me want to sit right down and cry, cry, cry
I walk along the city streets So dark with rage and fear And I.... I wish that i could be that bird And fly away from here I wish I had the wings to fly away from here
......But this little bird's fallen out of that nest now I've got a feeling that it might have been blessed So I've just got to put these wings to test
G). The best for last.....and played by one man on one guitar!
Looking out for love In the night so still Oh I'll build you a kingdom In that house on the hill Looking out for love Big, big love
You said that you love me And that you always will Oh you begged me to keep you In that house on the hill Looking out for love Big, big love
I wake up alone With it all I wake up But only to fall
Looking out for love Big, big love Just looking out for love Big, big love
Enjoy!
Jennifer

| Wow great words Jennifer and welcome!! I have seen the others Greg mentioned but was not sure who you were. Greg does get around . I have seen him do this with literature in some of his book club meetings so I am curious what he will come up with next. More favorites from music: 1 Surprise, surprise
Couldn't find it in your eyes
But I'm sure it's written all over my face
Surprise, surprise
Never something I could hide
When I see we made it through another day 2 Come away with me and we'll kiss
On a mountain top
Come away with me
And I'll never stop loving you
And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I'm safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
Come away with me (Greg loves that one also mmmm) 3 Like a flower
Waiting to bloom
Like a lightbulb
In a dark room
I'm just sitting here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on

| Thanks, JJ. You can never quite manage to have enough friends in this life.
Here are a couple more for you:
I love your lips when they're wet with wine and red with wild desire I love your eyes when the lovelight lies Lit with a passionate fire I love your arms when the warm white flesh Touches mine in a fond embrace I love your hair when the strands enmesh Your kisses against my face ....
But give me the love that so freely gives And laughs at the whole world's blame .....It sets my poor heart aflame
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters the same If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools Or watch the things you gave your life to broken And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools....
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you If all men count with you, but none too much ....Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
TGIF! Jennifer

| Nice examples of Wilcox and Kipling Jennifer. I will have to think about the music some, with just lyrics it is much tougher than poetry. My favorite Kipling quote is: "A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke". That would have to be one great cigar and no Clinton jokes please I believe he also had the line, "mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun." I will have to add more things to this discussion as I have time. I hope Karen, Stacy, Lala, Tracy, Kelly, and Diane will join in. Such beauty coupled with remarkable intelligence is not something I come across every day. I know Jennifer has a background in music and knows musicals so here is an easy one for her. There is no Dulcinea,
She's made of flame and air,
And yet how lovely life would seem
If ev'ry man could weave a dream
To keep him from despair.
To each his Dulcinea...
Though she's naught but flame and air! A slightly tougher one: Her heart was made of holidays
Her smile was made of dawn
Her laughter was an April song
That echoes on and on
Since I saw Elisa
The shadows are falling
And winter is calling above
But I still see Elisa Who sang it in the movie version? Lastly, who first said: I would rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal labotomy. (It was attributed to Tom Waits but I found it to be used much earlier). And one for the big city girls: THE fog comes
on little cat feet. It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on. Greg | | | |

| Hi Everyone, Great discussion! This is my favorite Kipling quote: "I am the cat who walks by himself and all places are alike to me. I will not come." (It is my cat's motto :-)
I have heard about Tom Waits and Nora Jones but haven't listened to much of their music yet. Thanks for the reminder!
When I was reading through all the song lyrics, I did have something come to mind-- "La Grange"-- sung by ZZ Top. I like that the song is based on a true story and this true story also inspired a musical...
Rumour spreadin' a-'round in that Texas town 'bout that shack outside La Grange and you know what I'm talkin' about. Just let me know if you wanna go to that home out on the range. They gotta lotta nice girls ah.
Have mercy.
Well, I hear it's fine if you got the time and the ten to get yourself in. A hmm, hmm. And I hear it's tight most ev'ry night, but now I might be mistaken.
Ah have mercy. ____________________________________
Anyway...it has a great beat, and I have to go to the gym and run on the treadmill, so I'll have a chance to listen to it. :-)

| Thanks for joining in Skyblue and that is a great song. I only know of one Dulcinea Greg and she is loved by Don Quixote de la Mancha, the man of La Mancha. I would have to Google anything else and that seems unfair so I will just plead ignorance. I have played Trivial Pursuit with Greg, I cannot recall getting to roll the dice Some movie quotes I love: Oh for goodness sakes, get down off that crucifix, someone needs the wood! It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy. Husbands should be like Kleenex: soft, strong, and disposable. Barf: I'm a mawg: half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend! A couple Blazing Saddles quotes (one of my favorite comedies) Lyle: Come on, boys! The way you're lollygaggin' around here with them picks and them shovels, you'd think it was a hundert an' twenty degree. Can't be more than a hundert an' fourteen. Lili Von Shtupp: Is that a ten-gallon hat, or are you just enjoying the show? Gabby Johnson: I wash born here, an I wash raished here, and dad gum it, I am gonna die here, an no sidewindin' bushwackin', hornswagglin' cracker croaker is gonna rouin me bishen cutter. Bart: You are my guest, and I am your host. What is your pleasure? What do you like to do? Jim: I don't know... play chess... screw... Bart: [quickly] Let's play chess. JJ | | | |

| Great quote Sky A very handsome man turned me onto this song, now I cannot get it out of my head: Some people, they like to go out dancing,
And other peoples, they have to work. Just watch me now!
And there's even some evil mothers,
Well they're gonna tell you that everything is just dirt.
Y'know that, women, never really faint,
And that villains always blink their eyes, woo!
And that, y'know, children are the only ones who blush!
And that, life is, just to die!
And, everyone who ever had a heart, oh,
That wouldn't turn around and break it.
And anyone who ever played a part, whoa,
And wouldn't turn around and hate it!
Sweet Jane! Whoa-oh-oh! Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane. Sweet Jane.
Sweet Jane. Sweet Jane. A Lou Reed song, right now I am listening to everything I can find by by him. Very soulful. (Greg figured out my name is really Jane lol) JJ

| Another classic song She wore a
Raspberry beret
The kind u find in a second hand store
Raspberry beret
And if it was warm she wouldnt wear much more
Raspberry beret
I think I love her A poem by cummings: it may not always be so; and i say
that if your lips, which i have loved, should touch
another’s, and your dear strong fingers clutch
his heart, as mine in time not far away;
if on another’s face your sweet hair lay
in such silence as i know, or such
great writhing words as, uttering overmuch,
stand helplessly before the spirit at bay;
if this should be, i say if this should be—
you of my heart, send me a little word;
that i may go unto him, and take his hands,
saying, accept all happiness from me.
Then shall i turn my face, and hear one bird
sing terribly afar in the lost land a quote from Ulysses by James Joyce: The snotgreen sea. The scrotumtightening sea. And some humor by a man who was once the most famous writer in the world: A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. (do not try this please) Action speaks louder than words but not nearly as often. Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest Better a broken promise than none at all. Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society. Familiarity breeds contempt - and children. Golf is a good walk spoiled.
I have made it a rule never to smoke more that one cigar at a time. It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand. It's good sportsmanship to not pick up lost golf balls while they are still rolling. Loyalty to the country always. Loyalty to the government when it deserves it. Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself. JJ you are always Sweet Jane to me. Greg

| Wow, great stuff! I really enjoyed reading, and admit a topic I don't often have the opportunity to share my endless thoughts on. "Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish" "Fanny, you're tongue is as sharp as a guillotine" "The effects of education, I suspect" A morning glory at my window satisifies me more than the metaphysics of books Guess this one: There were bells on a hill
But I never heard them ringing
No, I never heard them at all
Till there was you
There were birds in the sky
But I never saw them winging
No, I never saw them at all
Till there was you
Then there was music and wonderful roses
they tell me in sweet fragrant meadows
of dawn and dew
There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No I never heard it at all
Till there was you
Then there was music and wonderful roses
they tell me in sweet fragrant meadows
of dawn and dew
There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No, I never heard it at all
Till there was you
Till there was you | | | |

| Daisy, I was also just thinking of a Beatles tune, sort of a response to Greg's last post:
Don't let me down, don't let me down Don't let me down, don't let me down
Nobody ever loved me like she does Oh, she does, yeah, she does And if somebody loved me like she do me Oh, she do me, yes, she does __________________________________

| always liked this one. not applicable to me at the moment, but the song has been a favorite. "Far Away"
This time, This place
Misused, Mistakes
Too long, Too late
Who was I to make you wait
Just one chance
Just one breath
Just in case there's just one left
'Cause you know,
you know, you know
[CHORUS]
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you'll be with me
and you'll never go
Stop breathing if
I don't see you anymore
On my knees, I'll ask
Last chance for one last dance
'Cause with you, I'd withstand
All of hell to hold your hand
I'd give it all
I'd give for us
Give anything but I won't give up
'Cause you know,
you know, you know
[CHORUS]
So far away
Been far away for far too long
So far away
Been far away for far too long
But you know, you know, you know
I wanted
I wanted you to stay
'Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long
So keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go

| Julie and Rotifiend, talk about anything you wish. I may be bringing up the subject of tattoos in here again after today. Greg was showing a special interest in a vertical one on the small of a new volunteers back. Or maybe it was not her back that was intrigueing him. By the shore's of old Lake Michigan
Where the "hawk wind" blows so cold
An old Cub fan lay dying
In his midnight hour that tolled
'Round his bed, his friends had all gathered
They knew his time was short
And on his head the put this bright blue cap
From his all-time favorite sport
He told them "its late and its getting dark in here"
And I know its time to go
But before I leave the line-up
There's just one thing I'd like to know
(Chorus, sung)
Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy covered burial ground another by the same author When I first met you baby, you fed me on chicken and wine.
It was steak and potatoes and lobster and babe I sure felt fine.
But now all you ever give me is seaweed and alfalfa sprouts
And sunflower seeds and I got my doubts -
Babe, you left me here with the Chicken Cordon Bleus.
My stomach's so empty and all I got is food for thought.
And I been sittin' here thinkin' 'bout the twenty lbs. of groceries we bought.
We bought ten lbs. of brown rice and five more of beans
And five pounds of Granola and you know what that means,
I'm just a regular fella with the Chicken Cordon Bleus. A Chicago writer, Steve Goodman wrote these. JJ
