| Did anyone else end up with feelings of shock, disbelief and anger while viewing the finish of the Derby race? I could not believe what I saw and heard at the end and after the race from jockeys, trainers, winners, newscasters. While the winning horse and jockey were bouncing around celebrating, another animal ended up suffering a horrible and insensitive end to life! News reports after the race just dismissed this sorry spectacle with an "Aw well - that's just the way it goes." Any place to address or complain about this? CallieandCol | | | |

| I was both saddened and outraged when I heard about another beautiful horse dying due to these races. I know this is an age old race, but is it really worth it? The animal loses in the end. | | | |

| | I to was sorry and shocked. I couldn't believe how the death of a beautiful animal was treated as an after thought. I also feel that it is not necessary to show pictures or vidoes of the exact moment the accident happened. All that does is earn headlines and money. | | | |

| | I HATE horse and dog racing. They are industries built on animal cruelty so a few rich people can get richer. Horse racing has no soul. I pray for the day when we, as a society, have become so enlightened that we recognize how barbaric a "sport" it is. Rest in eternal, perfect peace Barbaro and now Eight Belles, and the many before you (both well known and unknown) who have died in the name of greed. | | | |

| | I couldn't agree more with all of you about horse racing and dog racing. I have heard that the greyhounds are trained by killing rabbits not to mention how they are destroyed when they no longer can race. | | | |

| | It just breaks my heart to see another victim of this 'sport'.It's not so far away from dogfighting- the owners just use the animals for profit, and don't really care what happens to them. Really, aren't people civilized enough to find other forms of entertainment???!??? | | | |

| I agree with all of you. What can we do to bring a stop to the injustice that is brought apon these magnificant animals? My heart feels so much for these tortured animals. There has to be so many other people out there that agree with the same thoughts as us. | | | |

| If there is a God, any advocate of horse racing hopefully will one day find themselves rotting in Hell. To have an animal mercilessly whipped in order to have it track a course and maintain a pace not of its own choosing, is beyond barbaric. | | | |

| Dear animal lovers, Thanks to all who posted and for the great ideas! I'd like to research further to find out the upper echelon in charge of the Derby and do some letter writing as well. Thanks again. CallieandCol | | | |

| I didnt watch the race...I don't watch any horse racing because I know the horrors that are behind this cruel "sport." Unfortunately these kinds of injuries happen all too often in horse racing because of the age and training of these animals. Horses of other disciplines aren't even carrying weight on their backs until 2-3 yrs of age because horses' bones develop very slowly. Undue stress and strain to their young bodies -as in racing- causes a plethora of health issues...many of which will haunt the horses for the rest of their lives. While they're still profitable to their owners, these injured horses will probably continue to race. The owners will have the horses nerves blocked or do other things to relieve the pain so the horse can race, despite doing further damage. Barbaro and Belle are only 2 of many horses who have been severly injured (most people only know them because the races were televised) and both had to be euthanized. I know Barbaro's owners tried to help him through medical intervention but I just feel it's too little, too late. And without the millions of dollars from donations even they wouldn't have been able to get him as far as he came. All that pain and suffering for a cruel sport. Oh, and do a little research on where these horses end up after they've retired from the track. The lucky few will be bought by rescue groups who will rehab them as best possible and find them forever homes (not always an easy task considering what these horses have been through). Sadly there's a very different ending for the majority of ex-racehorses.
So tell me again why people support and even enjoy such a "sport?!"

Okay you guys that are so sure people who race horses are the devil, you obviously have not ever seen the documentary on HBO about Barbaro. His owners cared more about his health and welfare than some people care about their children. They spent lots of money and time for eight months trying to heal his leg but laminitis got him in the end. They did not race him for the money, they were already rich. They treated that horse like royalty, all the way up to the very end when they were all there with him when he had to be euthanized. I'm not saying everyone treats their horses that well, but they are not all monsters.
