Just an FYI:

In our families, we have lost two cats from vaccinations in the past few years.  The cats were 6 and 16 and died of cancer at the injection sites.  I have since learned that MANY people are very cautious now about vaccinations.   Some animal groups/lovers only vaccinate against rabies.

So sorry about your loss, but thanks for the information. I was undecided about whether I should vaccinate my cats again....and now I have made up my mind!

Please also consider reading articles by Dr. Fox (syndicated columnist, he's everywhere on internet).  He also says vaccinations last way too long.  Thank you for your compassion.  It's rough knowing we took animals to a vet and requested vaccinations which killed our beloved indoor pets.

Last year I found a lump on my kitty by the vaccination site. Luckily I caught it early enough before it turned into cancer! Now she only gets the shots that are absolutely necessary and I monitor the vaccination site for weeks after. I am so sorry for your loss. I couldn't imagine if that had happened to my kitty!

There are a few things that veterinarians are now doing to prevent vaccine-related sarcomas. First, reducing vaccines to every 3 years -- at least distemper/leukemia, since many state laws require rabies yearly.

A lot of vets now are using a modified-live canary pox rabies vaccine (purevax), which does not cause sarcomas. This is a more expensive vaccine, though, so you have to be looking for it.

Also, now veterinarians do not give all the vaccines in the same location.

Vaccines even every 3 years still seems like overkill to me, especially for indoor only cats. But, you do what you can. My cat is 10 years old, and I have decided to stop vaccinating him. He is indoor only, and probably has had enough vaccines pumped into him over the years to last for 100 years. Think about it, most human vaccines last 14 years to life. Anyhow, I probably have a higher risk for catching rabies than an animal that never leaves the house.

I, too, am sorry for your loss. It is especially frustrating because you were doing what you thought was good for your pets, and following the advice of a professional.

Vaccinations can worsen CRF. Please read the post I've written on CRF - warning signs.

Thank you, I appreciate your helpfulness.  Losing the 16-year-old (my cat) was bad enough, but a 6-year-old (relative's cat) was shocking....and they didn't even need vaccinations.  Thank you for your concern and information.

My goodness, this is shocking and so disheartening to me.  It's a nightmare to think we do what we consider good pet parenting and then something like this....  More and more I've been seeing caution articles about pet vaccination.  I'm wondering if and when I adopt my next kitty, who will be an indoor cat, do I even need to get the baby shots?  Feline leukemia is also a horrible thing to imagine.

I guess we all have to decide what is best.  If a cat goes outside, that's a whole new (dangerous) area we've opened up for pets (leukemia, etc.)  I still don't know what to do when a vet demands they get a vaccination if they are treated for something else.  My one cat had blood in her eye (guess one of the boys swatted her) and the vet included the rabies vaccination during this visit.  I really don't know what we're supposed to do.  Truth be told, I'm not the greatest admirer of vets, I guess.  Dr. Michael Fox is a wonderful vet (columnist, all over internet), but I don't even know if he has a practice and where he is located.

My other cat died this week of cancer, so this is an awful year for our family's animals.
