I'm not happy putting the commercial products on Sammy. I wonder if there have been any studies on long term use of these chemicals on pets?

Does anyone know of any safer way to protect them that really works??

I'm outdoors with my dogs at least 3-4 days/week between hiking and working at the farm. I've been adding "bug-off garlic" (a supplement from Springtime Inc) to their feed twice daily for the past 2 years and I've only had to use Frontline once a year. Even though I haven't found any fleas or ticks on them, I apply Frontline late spring/early summer preventatively since we're outdoors so much. It's worked for us...good luck!

I found some info. From the Rodale Press book by Drs. Richard and Susan Pitcairn, Dr. Pitcairn's Guide To Natural Health For Dogs & Cats........... whew a lot to type K, here goes
They agree with bogorott about using garlic and brewer's yeast to your pets diet. Also suggested was to use an herbal flea collar, and or powder. There is a skin tonic too. This is from the same book, but from an animal herbalist, Juliette de Bairacli-Levy ( say that fast 5 times) Thinly slice a whole Lemon, including the peel. Add 1 pint of near-boiling water. Let it steep overnight. Sponge the solution on pet's skin and let it dry. This can be used daily. I have never used any of these remidies. Let me know how they work for your pet. Marianne aka rodo

I am using "Four Paws" brand Brewer's Yeast w/ garlic from the local pet store. It is supposed to work on fleas and i had used a similar brand years ago with another dog. I don't know about the effect on ticks though. The last 2 yrs, living here i have not seen one tick although my area is notorious for them so i do get the Lyme vaccine for both dogs.
